I just did a 1100 mile trip running from Houston to Indiana, starting off I ran thru a bunch of small towns but the majority of the trip was running 70+ with cruise and got a completed average of 18.5 running 315/70R17’s on Method wheels, was getting 21+ on the stock 255’s

The AT stayed in 7th gear 99.99% of the time and when I forced it in 8th it lagged so I just ran with it doing what it felt it needed to do so all in all not super unhappy with the mileage, it did seem to run smoother with air pressure at the 30-32 rather than the 35-37 I ran on the trip.

Stock sport driving from Houston to Rio Grande Valley I saw 21.6. I was very impressed.

20+ mpg in 4 door 4000 pound Jeeps with automatic transmissions is like being in Jeep Heaven.
This V6 engine and 8 speed transmission is a game changer for me. ....
Interesting that you say that. I just talked to a guy with a CJ (he was on the side of the road with a bad fuel pump), and he seemed shocked that I was getting better than 20 mpg. I think Jeep may be turning some heads, that may not have otherwise turned, with the efficiency of the JL. It certainly is a game changer.

Well I now have 4100 miles on my JL Sahara and I’m aveaging over 21 MPG.
The avg MPG is showing right at 22.3 but the real math of gallons purchased is a hair over 21.
I don’t drive fast or hard just trying to break the engine in with a combination of highway and city driving but I’m amazed. I drove a 3.5 liter 2Dr Chevy Colorado for 13 years and this 4Dr Jeep is averaging only 1/2 MPG less. On the highway I’m getting close to the EPA 23.

I have the 8 speed automatic and the stock 255 size AT tires.
Will my gas mileage “tank” if I install Rubicon take offs?
;) @Richamby, Ric, yes, I do predict that your gas mileage will effect your tank.

Yeah I don't get it. About to head out camping in SoCal so will be watching it with these new 315 Cooper STTs
Do you have a manual? Could be the difference...

Great input guys. I was hoping to hear from a few Sahara owners that have already done the Rubicon wheel swap. I’m thinking the 4.10 gears and 33 inch tires make it equal to our 3.7 and 32 inch tires. So the 3.7’s and 33 will hurt some. I just didn’t want to do anything to kill the great gas mileage I’m getting. So I might consider a new set of 17 inch wheels and 32 inch tires.
I don’t rock crawl but do travel back roads made by 2 guys and a chain saw.
Sounds like the stock tires will do the job and not mess with your gas mileage concern. If it's the looks you want, calculate how much that will be worth to you vs. the initial cost of wheels, tires, additional wear and then the long term tear on suspension, gas mileage reducing and likely, replacing tires more often than stock.

I get over 20 with the Sport s while running the a/c. This is great compared to my old Rubicon. I don't drive much expressway but many 4 lane rural roads that are similar. . I have stock A/T tires and automatic

Just got back from a 5200 (3000 mike) road trip from Toronto to the East coast and averaged 12l/ 100kms. Which is about 19.6 mpg. That’s in a loaded down Rubicon JLU. Moved my daughter to University. Seems in line with what others have posted. Used cruise control As much as possible.

I'm driving a stock JL Sahara automatic and averaged 22.7 on a drive from Ouray. CO. to Santa Fe through Chama. Lots of small towns and narrow 2 lane mountain roads with speeds from 35 to 65. On a similiar trip from Ouray to Telluride (including some of Black Bear Trail) and back averaged 23.4 mpg. Seems that I'm no longer in a rush since I've been driving the new Jeep and I'm sure that is reflected in the mpg.

Just did 660mile round trip to San Antonio from north Dallas in my JLU Sahara. Some luggage, wife and large son. I couldn’t get it over 18.4mpg. Headed south on I-35. Did around 75-80 most of the way. Did a little City driving and filled up. The calculated average was 17.9 whereas the computer said 18.2.
Return trip was up through the Hill Country 2/3 of the way and the final 1/3 back on I-35. 17.6 was the blast I ever saw with all the hills and constant slowing and speeding up through small towns. Once on the highway I nursed it back up to 18.4 by drafting and following faster large SUV’s.
Not terrible but not great. I have a 2.5” lift, 10” wide Helo rims with 275/70-18 Cooper AT’s. They actually measure 1/4” shorter than the stock Bridgestone HL’s but are a couple inches wider.
I could feel the engine struggle with wind resistance. Barely ever saw 8th gear. Mostly 6th and 7th not quite as much. That 8 speed would be great if it had a little more power to churn that top gear. I think the engine is fine down low but runs out of steam too early. Kind of wishing I had the turbo for some more torque.
Now, if they were to supercharge the 3.6...

I'm averaging 21mpg in the city @70—73MPH. I also use my Cruise Control when I drive in the city and have noticed that when I turn it off and manually drive, I'll get 18—19mpg.

I averaged 22mpg doing highway speeds (when I first bought the Jeep, ~200miles) @75—80MPH. I'm excited to see if this will change now that it's broken in a bit more (3100miles).

My JLUR with automatic was getting about 21.5 MPG average stock. Now with lift and 37's I'm getting 18. I really need to get a tuner because the shift points are now off and it holds a gear too long. I've been driving it in manual mode and that's helped a lot. If I drive it in D mode mileage drops to 14.7 MPG.
