I've finally found a rig that matches my requirements but...it's in California. Are California diesels different from the one I may get elsewhere? I know some states follow California emission standards but is there much difference and is enough to be a deal breaker...I live in Utah and have one on order but probably won't arrive until the next ice age...

Same everywhere. CA ruined diesels for everyone with their emissions regs...

That said, I drive diesels. I currently have a 2017 Ram 3500 Cummins and Rubicon Ecodiesel. Previous diesels include a 2003, 2007, 2015 Ram 3500's (two were pre-smog) and a 2009 Jetta TDI.

Don't let the naysayers get to you. I've never had an emissions-related issue with any of them.

I agree with CAC, the federal Diesel emission standard is the same as California's, but if I remember correctly, California requires a longer warranty on the emission system components on Diesel motors. I think it is 8 years and 100k miles. Maybe every state gets that. I too have a lengthy list of person Diesel vehicles. 1999 Ford 7.3, 2000 Ford 7.3, 2003 Ford 6.0 (x2), 2007 GMC Duramax, 2012 Ram 3500 6.7, 2015 Ford 6.7 and a 2016 Ram 2500 6.7 and I too have had no emissions related issues on those vehicles however I run a fleet of medium and heavy duty trucks and run exclusively Cummins motors and I can tell you that at lease 90% of all breakdowns or CEL issues in the first 3 years of use are emissions related. Somehow they figure out how to make it work in the light vehicles.

Thanks for your reply! Good information! One big reason I hate purchasing in Cali from out of state is the California tax structure. You pay Cali sales tax and if my state is less, I have to get the difference back...from California...good luck. I've removed California from my search model...

Are you sure about this? When I buy a car, I pay my local sales tax of the address that it is registered too. For example my work has a higher sales tax than where my house is (8 miles away), if I buy a vehicle for work I have to pay the higher taxes then I would for a vehicle I buy personally and register at home. I once bought a quad new from out of state and had to pay local taxes at the DMV on it since no sales taxes were collected. I would assume that it is the same if the purchase went the other direction. That being said, California doesn't really have the reputation of getting a good deal on vehicles. Los Angles area is OK, but the Bay Area is terrible.

Well... Called a dealer and out of state residents pay California sales tax, get a permit for $160 to transport only good for 24 hrs. When you get to your home state you register only...You pay sales tax just one...My state is 6.2% Cali is 7.4%

Wow, that's low for CA. The county I lived in last was 9.75%. Chicago Illinois is the worst. Sales tax is over 10%.

Yeah, that must me the default amount if you don't register to a California address. I'm at 8.75 and my work is at 9.125 for sales tax. Property is like 1.2%/year. I need to move!

They always find a way in Cali to make you pay more than you should!
I experienced a financial problem when I bought a car in Utah and then moved to California.

When I tried to register the vehicle in California, the license staff there demanded I pay the additional tax California required. If I had known that, I would have simply not re-registered it. Yeah, if caught you can be fined, but I would now risk it.

It's funny because I have a car in Arizona that is registered in California and has been there for the last six years. I have been able to write a letter stating that it is out of state and cannot smog it this whole time. California has no problem doing that as long as they get the registration money.
