First new vehicle I have bought in 20+ years. Do you have to break in the engine with the oil change at 500 miles still? Or does the manufacturer break in the engine? We have Wrangler 6cyl diesel on order. Sales guy told me I don't have to because it comes already broken in. Doesn't sound right to me.

Yep, as above change as you see fit but don't go beyond the recommended service interval. Just remember the oil in a diesel gets black quickly so don't be concerned. I'm old school so I still change my oil between 3 and 4 thousand miles even while using synthetic.

I figured the sales guy was wrong. I know the piston rings need to, basically scrub and sync to the cylinder walls. Once we get our Wrangler, we'll look at manufacturer recommendations. Thanks.

Mine used a quart of oil in the first 2500 miles of heavy load use .. hasn’t used any noticeable amount since then .. I would consider the rings seated

Read the manual written by engineers not the internet. It tells you everything you need to know.

Thanks. I was just curious. We don't have the owner's manual since we just ordered the build a couple of weeks ago.

ENGINE BREAK-IN RECOMMENDATIONS —
DIESEL ENGINE (IF EQUIPPED)The diesel engine does not require a break-in period due to its construction. Normal operation is allowed, providing the following recommendations are followed:

 Warm up the engine before placing it under load.
 Do not operate the engine at idle for prolonged periods.
 Use the appropriate transmission gear to prevent engine lugging.
 Observe vehicle oil pressure and temperature indicators.
 Check the coolant and oil levels frequently.
 Vary throttle position at highway speeds when carrying or towing significant weight.
