i am interested in blacking out the Rubicon standard wheels more inline with what some of the first car shows had on display.

What are the thoughts on a black decal as opposed to plastic dip spraying the rims? I would like to keep the red Willys logo.

I definitely would prefer more of a satin or matte black finish, than a gloss black.

Has anyone had any success?

If you can find a black overlay to cover all the silver metal, I'd say do it. I saw a VW Gti with black vinyl overlays covering the bare metal and it looked good. Alternatively, you might want to try to vinyl wrap them yourself.

I watched a video from them installing it on what looks like a GTI. Looked pretty good

I did this to my rims, see attached... wasn’t not real cheap but I like it. I did a carbon fiber look. I had them do the grill inserts too

Plastidip for the win! I Plastidiped my chrome wheels on my Super Duty 3 years ago. Just recently re Plastidiped them cause they needed freshening up. The stuff works great and is very inexpensive. If you don’t like it, peel it off and you wasted $6.

I can’t tell from the photo what you did, but the wheels look good blacked out.

I plastidipped a spare Rubicon rim I had and I noticed around the recessed lugnut areas the plastidip was separating from the rim.

But I am most likely leaning in this direction.

I personally would not recommend the plastidip. It is cheap, and if applied correctly is easy to remove, but it also looks cheap IMO. When I powdercoated my wheels that had been formerly plastidipped as a test to see if I liked the look, it was night and day. The plastdip is so much less black it almost looked gray in comparison.

I plan on going the same route, but I want to do the silver area a gloss black and leave the satin pockets and red logo as is. Any decent paint/ wheel shop should be able to do that, but I will wait until I am ready for new tires and then give them the bare rim for a few days.

Vinyl wrapping the wheel would be easy to do while the tire is still on. I would pay the extra over plastidip if you don't plan on painting/ powdercoating

Here is a close up, the orange reflection is from my shirt and not on the wheel. I left the pockets the factory paint. I was going to do the silver on the rim in a matte but the guy who did the wrapping suggested the faux carbon fiber and did one tire and showed me and I agreed

I had mine powder coated with a satin (semi-gloss) finish.

I like that...but I still want the red Willy’s Jeep logo to remain.

I noticed on the AEV website they recommended against powder coating their aluminum rims because how it affects the strength of the metal. Is that a valid concern?
