Bike Rack Options??

The tire mount rack through the center hole won't work.

from there, the racks are generic for the most part. Jeep did extend the gutters on the hard top. You could now get a roof rack on top easier than before and have no issues seeing with the camera.

Option two? Install one of these to your rear view camera to see over the bikes:

Nobody has mentioned this one ^^^. Looks like it fits at least up to 33” tires without requiring an extension plus folds down so the tailgate opens. Plus it’s only 130$. Any reason nobody else is using this?

It's probably an ok basic rack, but if you have a nicer bike it's really going to come up short. The rubberstraps holding the bike on usually leave marks on the frame and always wear out after a year or two. The bikes will swing back and forth while driving, hitting the rack, Jeep, and each other. Also, the headset is free to turn which means the front wheel will move around even more...

Acceptable for someone who doesn't use a rack very often or isn't concerned about the condition of their bikes, but not a solution for regular use, especially with nicer bikes.

Great feedback and advice. I always SMH when I see expensive bikes on cheap racks... rattling, rubbing, banging around at 75mph. I beg anyone that has nice bikes, don't skimp on your transport methods.

Picked up a Backswing from REI since they are on sale (20% off) but still an expensive solution. Not sure if I like how far out the rack sits but affords plenty of clearance to open the gate when folded out:

I also have a hitch extender and prefer the distance but it is not tight and rocks in the receiver which is why I bought the backswing.

Ok, I received the backswing from Amazon today to go along with my 1up. It was just a little cheaper there than the REI 20% off sale...

I wish my 1up was black to match better, but I can’t complain too much because I got a great deal on it from someone on Craigslist who was going with the single bike rack.

I put the backswing on and it already gives me more clearance. It does stick out further than my extension, but I will wait to judge after our first trip. I’ll try to grab some more photos then too.

That is a new style P.K. Ripper made by SE. They've made 26" and 29" versions of their Rippers and Quadangles and in some cases they put fat tires on them. The call that one in the picture a Fat Ripper cuz it comes with 3.5" fat tires. Very cool bikes. Only one speed but at this point in my life, that's about all the faster I go anyway. Super fun to ride too. Usually I have a sleeker white leather seat on there, but swapped it out for the comfy one today.

I had a Hutch Trickstar back in the day...I loved that bike. I shrugged it off when I got my license...wish I still had it to give to my son.

It fits pretty well and more clearance over the 33. I think a 35 might require the adapter to make this work.

I haven’t tried it yet but I will attempt to this weekend. It states it holds 250lbs. I only have one adult bike and 2 kid bikes so it should be good. What worries you about it?

Extra point of failure. More stuff to wobble. And in off-road conditions, I'd worry the arm would get ripped off. (That was the appeal of the 1up... THE best rack for light off-roading). I am probably a little too OCD when it comes to these things though. Let us know how yours works out.

I understand your point. I won’t be taking the bikes hard core off-roading. I think fire trails and the like will be fine. I still have the 1up hitch extension and will still be using it. Not being able to get in the trunk with the bikes loaded is a pain. I don’t mind switching around hitch parts to accomplish what I need. I will give it a try and if it doesn’t work I am sure someone on Craigslist would be more than happy to take it off my hands. I’ll let you know how it works...

Hi all,

Think I’ve decided to go with the 1Up rack, but don’t have a hitch yet. Is it recommended to install hitch myself or through dealer? If it can be done myself, any recommendations for where to buy the hitch?
