so I added Ridged ignites. Had the flush mount in a 2018 jk and got the surface mount. Wanted something not too noticeable. Awesome mod. They actually sit forward more for now. Gonna move them back 2” and need a 1/2 spaced to drop them down . $120 well worth it. And I have no idea how to wire them to a switch so I didn’t do that.

Why don’t you wire them to your backup lights?

If you didn’t wire them to a switch, how are they on?

I’m going to assume you were talking about the aux switches, and you wired them into the trailer reverse light wire. Good choice.

Yes I was gonna tap into the harness but I decided to tap into the taillight since there’s less water and crap to seep into my splices

There was nothing other than the bracket with a hole in it.
Didn't you say you got the surface mount, looked like a go pro mount in the pictures.. Care to show pictures of how they are attached? I'm looking to do the same.. Thanks!

That must be the GoPro mount. The one it comes with is smaller and swivils. I used the existing screws in the bumper. But like I said, I’m moving them back and either drilling a hole for a #10 screw or attempt to use a nut and bolt with the exiting holes.

So I moved them back. I use a 3/4 spacer and a #8 screw. Drilling was easy. Zip striped all the wires and shrink tubed them. Sucks you spend 50Gs on a rig and you have to do this. It actually looks like it belongs there. Either mounting position looks good but farther back you can’t see them

Was just a more discrete installation the point of moving them back? Much effect on the lighting?

@Fire Burns

I installed the more rearward way, but did test with the mounting toward the front more. Very little difference if any in the light output.

The install takes very few minute if you do the more rearward install. The more forward install ... going forward toward front of JL it takes say 20 mins. longer.

So, personal preference. For me, I wanted to see them and wanted them well away form the muffler, which gets quite hot.

I do like the hidden look though of @Shub_32 's.

Only comment that @Shub_32 made earlier, that did not set right with me ... was he implied splicing into the 7 pin was not so great an idea... well, if you do the splice properly, the splice at the 7 pin is aok.

IF you ever take a minute to look at the factory 7 pin hookup, you will see that their connections will chitt the bed due to water/moisture, long before your properly done splice at the 7 pin.

Anyway if you want to spice at the tail lamp that is swell, but not at all necessary.

Like Rhinebeck said. The muffler may be an issue. I’ll check it after a drive. I’m actually gonna borrow a tap so I can use a machine screw instead of a sheet metal one. Yes I moved them back for discreetness. I may have to move them more towards the bumper if there’s too much heat. Either way looks good. Very bright tiny light.Just checked and the wire is about 2” from muffler. If I have to move it, it will take less than 5.

@Shub_32

You may be alright in regard to the muffler. Hottest spots on the muffler seem to be right behind where your passenger side one is. My muffler paint takes a hit in that area..

Your driver's side one,will be less affected.

I see the heat issue/hit with the muffler paint in regions where temps are above 82. Just spot check in hot weather so you know whether that placement is impractical due to the muffler heat issue.

Hey, if you tow at all, you may want to set those back-ups up with an Aux switch. Easy to do. Maybe 30 min. more work but you do have to spend a few $ for 2 diodes.

When I'm towing at night, I can turn on the Aux b/u lights and actually see the coupling, tow chains, trailer very well in my rear camera. Also, switched light comes in handy when loading at night, camping, etc..

Thanks for the info. I’m afraid to do any more wiring. Jeeps only 2 weeks old. Point me in the direction on how to do it. Just in case
