OK. I got my JLU (Automatic)on Saturday night. On my way home from the dealer I pulled up to my first red light. The engine shut off, as expected. But as soon as it did, a message popped up in the information center that said “Shift to P Then Desired Gear”

It does this every time ESS kicks in at red lights. Is this some sort of god awful bug? I wasn’t planning on disabling it, hoping I could entertain it so I could get better than the 12.5 MPG I got in my JKU for 5 years. But clearly this isn’t by design. If I wanted to shift this much I would have gotten the manual again. Heh. But I wanted the 8 speed ZF auto tranny. My commute is 30-45 minutes of stop and go city traffic.

So has anyone else seen this madness?

Thanks in advance for any info.

No I don’t get that message-it just starts up when I release the brake pedal.

Same. That's an issue. Engine should stop and then start when you release the brake pedal. Take it back...

This message is also displayed as a part of the auto park feature and is displayed when one of the doors is ajar

Sounds like AutoPark safety feature.

See owner’s manual page 294.

Were you wearing seatbelt? Maybe your door was not fully shut?

Might be a defective door or seat sensor thinking you are exiting the vehicle and activating AutoPark when the engine shuts off.

Just another reason to have a manual.
I know, I know. Just got sick of driving the manual day in day out in stop and go traffic. Once I’m off pavement I’m only in 1st and 2nd anyways. Either way, it should work.

Hi mikegt,

If you end up going to the dealer, please let me know. I can go ahead and get a case created and escalated it to a Case Manager. Very sorry for the inconvenience you experienced.

Hi there,
I have had my JLUR with automatic for about 11 days - yay. Have put about 1200 miles on it so far and have learned a few interesting things about my engine auto start stop and was wondering if anyone else was experiencing the same thing.

In heave freeway bumper to bumper traffic for period more than 15 minutes. The auto start stop will stop functioning. I get a dash message that states the system is not ready. Once this happens...it will not be ready again until I either have a long period of normal driving or I let park the car for a while. The only explanation I can gather is that the battery for this system gets below some threshold and causes it to not restart its functionality until the battery is at a proper charge. The main battery must charge the auto start stop battery while its parked.

I know I could easily turn off the system and save my self the headache but if the above is true it would seem a simple switch cut off to the second battery would be a simple permanent bypass that would be easy to install.

Ok... last oddity. When the auto start stop is working...and I pull into a parking spot. The engine cuts off but then when placing the car in to park...it causes the engine to restart. This seems like it should not happen. Is this happening to anyone else? it may not be Park that is causing the restart, it could be coming out of Drive, or going into Reverse...dont know exactly...but annoying nonetheless.

Anyone else having the above issues?

About your first issue, idk because I dont get that much bumper to bumper traffic and have never seen that message. But its normal for it to restart when shifting to park.

The start up at parking is probably the feature of this I’ve found the most annoying.
I have changed my routine to stop it. When the engine stops, press the ignition button and then shift to park.
It prevents the restart.

It’s not preferable, and confusing when I drive my Ram

But, I’ve also turned up the Jeep radio a dozen times... “putting it in drive” from the Ram habit.

Mine randomly flashes "Vehicle Not in Park" on the screen and dings at me while I'm driving. :) These things have all kinds of gremlins. It's a first model year vehicle!

Did you see the video somebody posted last night of the guy who was doing a YouTube review of a new JL and the engine shut off on him? When it did, it wouldn't start again but all the lights on the Jeep were flashing like a disco hall! Exterior and interior lights going nuts! It looked like Independence day!
