FCA thermostat may be there to make sure the trans fluid remains above the minimum operating temperature. And the aux trans cooler would be there for situations where the temps rose too high for the existing cooler to handle. That is why I had a trans cooler on my Jeep, to deal with some off-road situations that were overpowering the ability to adequately cool.

Z Autmotive makes a module called a Tazzer that allows you to calibrate your Speedo and many other things. One of those other things is it allows you to turn the engine fan on full. It tricks the computor into thinking the trans temp is 231 degrees. It I see my trans temp get much above 215-220 I just turn on the fan for a few minutes. Cools the engine, trans and engine oil.
