Not your typical Auto Stop/Start discussion. I don't mind it mostly.

When I pull into garage, put foot on the break, engine stops. Put Jeep in Park, engine starts ...

Um, no, that's when I really don't need it. Anyone else observe this, and I don't want to take my jeep in, but is there another avenue to report what are perceived bugs or glitches?

Its functioning as designed, Your ESS will only function when your transmission is in drive. Once you move the shift knob out of drive and into any other postion ESS is overridden and the engine will start.

I tend to shift into neutral just short of a stop to prevent this, then shift to park and shut down. Easy way to get around this minor annoyance.

My car does this and its annoying. Try applying less pressure on the brake. I can prevent ESS from coming on in my Mercedes every time by applying light pressure.

@Zazoh

Normal behavior, unfortunately. Nothing the dealership service department can do for that.

Tazer JL or Tazer JL Lite can disable ESS, but you probably know this already.

Thanks -- I'll give it a try.

It's nothing more then an annoyance ... okay a a bit of bad design. In a mechanical world, it makes sense, but seems like this is all computer controlled, thus

If engine stoped AND shifter moved to Park then
Shut down
else
Start on break release
or
engine overheat
or
...
End if

Thanks though, good to know it just isn't me.

When I am parking at work I am in a parking garage I always inch forward to make sure my ass isn't sticking out but of course there is a barrier in front. When I'm home I roll in the garage and evidently go full send with braking because this is where it typically happens. :P

I have 2 ESS vehicles. A Lincoln and a GM.
Both do the same.
It's the 21st Century. Phones have cameras and keyboards. Who needed that.

I experience the same thing. I just tap the ESS OFF button as I’m pulling in the driveway so that it doesn’t stop and start as I’m getting into the garage and shifting in park.

If the engine didn’t start back up when put into park, most people would forget to shut down the vehicle via the push button!

I agree it’s a stupid design. Why restart the engine when you plan to park? It just uses more gas and puts more wear and tear on the engine.

Make ESS Great Again....by disabling it!

I noticed it week 1 with mine. I got into a habit of switching to neutral at 1 MPH so it won't shut off before I get the chance to hit Park.

I have never had this happen yet. I must be quick at parking and putting the transmission into park.
It is like 2 or 3 seconds before shut down right? How long does it take to shift?

I just push the button to disable it as soon as I start it. First thing.
I been working on cars, trucks and motorcycles my whole life and find it annoying when the Jeep shuts off when you come to a stop.
Makes you think it quit running.

I throw my automatic into first gear, basically a variation of @Sean L's post to prevent ESS from engaging.

I wish the JL's logic here was :

If JL thrown into park or neutral then

never start nor stop auto; do nothing

elseif JL taken out of park or neutral intoto gear other than park and neutral
AND rig in ESS event then

start engine

End

In other words:

Placing the gear shifter into Parking/Neutral should not start an engine in ESS, only taking it out of these these, and not putting the shifter into the other one of the two, should start the engine in ESS.
