They also restrict towing speeds to 100KPH (62MPH) in Europe. That lets them handle heavier trailers safely.

Also, in Europe they typically have about 5% of the trailer weight on the tongue vs 10% for US trailering. If axle weight capabilities were the primary limiting factor, that would be another explanation why they have a higher rated capacity in the EU.

Either way for my choice I am still more likely to get portals than upgraded axles at this time... We'll see how bad things are going to get though...

So I read this thread about EU tow ratings. And I have a question about the receiver that is put on 2024 JLs with the 5000 lb tow rating? Are they still a Class 2 receiver? Are they same as is put on the JLs that aren't rated for 5000 lbs?
same receiver and light weight cross member...I dunno how much I would trust it to tow 5000lbs and have 500lbs tongue weight...if all smooth roads no problem but I can see hitting a big dip or gully at speed and having issues...

I know when I used a weight distributing hitch on my JK, everything flexed. I wonder how Jeep is getting away with the 5k tow rating and not upgrading the receiver and it's connection points?
