The paddle shifters will still be operating the automatic transmission, just like the console shifter's +/- function. It's literally a button in a different position.

I have never used my +/- button on any of my automatics. But don't take them off road either.

I will say that those SxS's are the reason I bought a Jeep.

Looking to buy 2021 Jeep Rubi Unlimited. Anyone have paddle shifters for 21' Jeep installed aftermarket or otherwise? I have no R arm movement and would love to be able to shift again. I can still use a stick shift but I am not as safe as I used to be.

I stumbled onto this thread, and after skimming it, I guess my theory about the dead buttons on the back of the steering wheel has gone flying out the window. I figured they were shift buttons for an automatic. I have a manual, and those buttons are totally dead as far as I can tell. Maybe they control firing the machine guns on the Rubicon James Bond Edition or something.
