Has anyone tried to mount an ARB fridge (37 or 50 qt) in their JLU? I am looking to install one with the control panel rear gate facing but it looks like it may be a little tight with the rear seat.

Lowering the rear seat or removing it isn't an option for me.

@BSw
I can see your pic of the ARB 50 installed on the driver side of your JLU, but that conflicts with @aCeMedic13 and @Tintop, who were unable to get the ARB 50 to work on the driver side. I’m wondering if their environment is a bit different than yours.

For anyone who has tried to get the ARB 50 to fit on driver side, could you confirm the following:

1. Is your fridge mounted on a slide, or just on the carpet, or other? Maybe height is a factor.
2. How old is your ARB 50? Maybe there’s a slight variation in size between different model years that might explain why one fits, and another doesn’t.
3. Were you able to close tailgate and lock seats in place simultaneously?

@BSw I just found a post of yours on another thread, which might help explain why your ARB 50 fit, while others didn’t. You wrote:

“The way it is squeezed between the seat and the tailgate, there’s no way to take it out without opening the tailgate. Next step will be a slide that allows securing it down even a bit better”

I’m wondering if height is the issue here. If yours is direct on the carpet, it is lower, and the back would strike the rear of the seat at a lower spot, thus allowing more distance between that point and the bump in the tailgate.

Looking at the photo, it looks like he has cloth seats. From what I have read, the cloth seats don’t have the gap cover. I wonder if the lack of gap cover gives enough clearance for it to fit on the driver side?

I have a 50l and 25l. Both are Dometics. I don’t have the JL yet to see how well they fit but both fridges have been great!

A slide lifting the firidge might cause an issue yes, haven't seen a fridge slide for the JL out yet, so waiting on that, for now this works like a charm, just back from a 3 week trip and used the fridge constantly

The 50qt contacts the tailgate when its on the drivers side, i dont know if his is rotated slightly or not flush to the side of the cargo area, but we ran a 50qt in our JK and now have it in the JL and I run it on the passenger side because of this. Also with cloth seats.

You can see in these images. All of these are with the seats locked into position. Cloth interior.

Fits great on passenger side directly up against side of the cargo area.

This is what it looks like when its flush against the driver side and try and latch it.

If you move it over a couple inches you can close the tailgate, but you lose cargo area.

You need to move it over even further to use the plug in the back of the JL for it.

Good theory. But I just went out to my Jeep and measured the gap cover, and it is less than 12” tall, and only about 1/4” thick, and fits fairly tight against the rear of the back seat. So any fridge or other rectangular box that is taller than 13” or so would clear the gap cover (the gap cover would end up untouched in that little triangle that is formed between the cargo floor, back of fridge, and back of rear seat).

Uploading a pic here from another user to where you can see the gap cover:

Thanks all for the quick and thorough answers and pics! I’m thinking (but not certain) the reason @BSw can close his tailgate, and others can’t might be because he has slid the fridge more toward the center of the cargo space in order to get those bumps on the front of the ARB to clear that protrusion on the driver side of tailgate - as seen in this photo from @HeavyMetal:

As others have noted, the 37qt fits just fine on either side, and it's primarily due to the overall height of the unit versus the slant of the seat backs. The 50qt has the same outline size, but is taller so the angled seat back works against you there. Regardless, I mounted my fridge on the passenger side so that I could make better use of the storage space while utilizing the 12V power port, which they relocated to the driver side for some reason?? Just works better for me.

Who makes the tray you have sitting on top of the fridge?

I started with a cheap Harbor Freight cargo rack, cut it down to fit between the rollbar, and welded it back together. Made some simple spanners that engage the hard top mounting bolts out of some light gauge 1-1/4" box tube I had on the rack, and slapped some black paint on it. Easy-peasy. :like:
