Fair warning, rant incoming!

I’ve already had my radio replaced once, and it still can’t be depended on to run CarPlay.

The one that was replaced also had a fun feature of staying on indefinitely after the jeep was turned off, just draining my battery.

For some reason, both the last radio and this one, just won’t work with CarPlay, or acknowledge usb connections at all every once in a while, only for the issue to (so far, knock on wood) clear the next day. Not to mention after a battery disconnect my off-road pages decided to completely disappear…

At this point I would’ve preferred an old style no-touchscreen radio since I basically have to use the phone mount anyways for navigation or off-road apps. At least I wouldn’t have this giant annoying screen that’s not doing anything useful most of the time.

Anyone else wish Jeep just hadn’t included a touchscreen?

Jeep Wrangler JL Anyone else wish to just rip out their radio? AC0A2D69-F183-4B31-BEE1-6A8807BA6FB6

No fault, no searching, defaults to as set at shutdown knobs and buttons, and not just the radio. Plenty of room left for real guages since I typically run the guage screen anyway. ….
You, of course cannot since your off-road pages don’t work.

That new Slate EV doesn't have a radio...

I wish there was a true off roader package for the Wrangler. No frills, just the mechanicals (lift, tires, lockers, discos, etc). But also crank windows, no stereo, etc. I would have bought that.

But my stereo has been reliable.

Weirdly I still have them in the gauge cluster, just not the radio 🤦‍♂️

I'm guessing a 12" screen. Soooo many issues with them.
actually the 8.4", just been issues for 3 years now

That radio is an eyesore, it the number 1 thing I dislike with these Wranglers, I would delete it in a heartbeat if I could.

2 things a Wrangler should not have a touchscreen radio, and carpet.

Someone build a uconnect delete for the 4xe.

OP - some of the issues with car play are related to the power draw of newer iphones when connected to the USB-A (e.g. in the console). It works much better over USB-C from the dash.

Since I didn't want the wires hanging from there, I bought a cheap Amazon wireless car play adapter, plugged that on the console and connect wirelessly to car play. After I did that, all my problems with car play (mostly navigation map freezes) went away.

Give it a shot before ripping your radio off. Good luck.

Thanks, I actually had one of those for a couple years until the adapter started to die and causing more problems than it solved. I've since switched to a bulletproof mount and a usb-c low profile cable that doesn't require the door over the ports flipped up. TBH this post was more to gripe about how bad the radio system haha.

Unfortunately the occasional day where it just doesn't recognize USB items was true with the adapter as well, best I can figure out it's tied to some cyclical function in the software, so every once in a while it doesn't configure properly and won't recognize USB data, but then clears itself within a few hours to a day.

But how could they charge 70K for that? Jeeps need all that junk with how they pad their margins.

I'm find with modern infotainment systems, but they need to work well. With the exception of the console USB port (dash ports work flawlessly), my UConnect 4C system is very good. A minor gripe is the Off Road pages load slowly. I'll give credit to FCA for providing them...it's more instrumentation in a Wrangler than we've ever had. If I could put in an enhancement request...please give us EGT for turbo applications.

Another bright spot in infotainment was the GM MyLink systems in the last 10 years. I don't know about the newer 12.4" displays, but the older 8" displays were dead reliable, zero lag, they just worked.

No issues with my 8.4. It's a decent system and I like it. Had a random issue with the 5" screen in my last Jeep. Once or twice in the 3.5 years I owned it it stayed on after shutting vehicle off. Probably for a solid 30 minutes or so. Eventually turned off on it's own.
Our other two Jeeps have Stinger HEIGH10s in them. They're ok. Nice big screens, but not waterproof. The new HORIZON12 head units from Stinger have an IP rating and higher resolution. If I were going to replace my 8.4 it would be with that one.

I dream of getting rid of the screen in general... and adding manual controls for the stuff I really use and an "aux input" for the audio - I would pay 1k tomorrow, and I'd have a field day dismantling the dash!
