Hello guys
Currently own a 2020 Sahara JLU 2.0 turbo
Just picked up my rubi 44 rear end yesterday!
About to pull the trigger on a front end
I have a hook up so I can grab either a 210 JL44 for 2400
OR
A Ultimate dana 44 for 4200
Im running the 295-70-18s nitto terra mud grapplers (basically a small 35) on stock wheels. My next tire WILL be 37s.
IF i get the Ultimate dana 44 with 488 gearing will it be bad for the jeep to run the 488s on 35s?
These purchases will blow my wad for about a year so no more money to get 5 wheels and tires 37s.
What ya'll think

I say 4.88 is a good gear for 35's but if you think there's a chance you will go to 37's in the future go 5.13's. That's my opinion, and now i'm gonna run from it like a nuke is inbound..

My next tire size is 37s. I have a used set of tires on for now which I got dirt cheap with stock wheels. I'm just wondering if it would be bad to be "overgeared" for possibly 6 months.
If I go with the stock rubi front the 410s will be just fine. But I'll be regearing those down the line so its a question of buy once cry once.

I'll just say this. After agonizing over it for about a year now while waiting to pull the trigger on a set of 60's, I have decided to go with 5.13's to run 37's for my usage. If I bought my 60's tomorrow and had to wait a while to buy wheels and tires (8 lug) i'd rock my 35's until then and not stress over it, at all.

Right. I just know that getting 513s from the jump will be rough on my current tire size. Can always get the 4.10s front rubi and call it a day. I plan on going to 37s which is enough for my wheeling

I have 37s on 4.88 on a 2.0l. It runs great and holds 8th gear even on small inclines and accelerates nicely. I would probably go 5.13 if I did it again just to be even better but I have no regrets. I realize this is a mostly 3.6l forum, so my choice is probably irrelevant :bandit:

Understanding the 5.13 pinion is weaker than 4.88 and 4.88 is more efficient with 37s on the hwy, did that factor in your regearing to 4.88?

Yes, both did but the 5.13 being weaker was probably the biggest factor. Of course, after I already had the work done I read that the strength difference between the two is really minor, at least for the JL. I guess the 5.38 is where the weaker pinion comes into play.

I’m not unhappy with my decision but feel I didn’t make the perfect one. That’s pretty routine for my purchase decisions anyway, kind of like my noisy, high maintenance suspension. :headbang:

Y’all sure got a lot of cash laying around lol must be nice. 4.88 on 35’s youll be at around 2,500 on the highway which may be a bit annoying, 5.13 on 37 are solid but you do lose just a slight bit of fuel milage. If theu made a 4.97 that would probably
Be the perfect balance for economy and power running 37’s . And BtW if you are going 60’s dont screw around w 37 . Go with 40’s .

My income is variable (self employed) so I prefer smaller monthly payments that’s why I got my sahara used for great price. Money comes in clumps. Just got a big clump so now the time to axle swap. I went with the 210 axle as 4200 plus a rear regear was too much to cough up lol

Might have been even cheaper to buy a done up JK and replace the fenders and grille to update the looks. Bet most JK/JL owners wouldn't be able to tell it's not a JL.
