The antenna on our Jeeps in the Army were for the comms and three times as long as the OEM antenna on the JL. They were mounted in the back, on a base with a spring and bent forward.
The only reason we tied them down was to keep them from getting torn up in the woods or snapping them off going under the bridges in Germany.

pic of my stuck Jeep on the East/Wes German border circa 1988 for amusement. You can see the antenna bent over the roof.
Got our jeep stuck in front of my buddies hooch the guys came out and picked it up/ saved the day

Not that I haven't thought of that - but I read a LOT of complaints about stubbies getting really bad reception. So, in answering the OP question, no one has ever seen this, it seems....
Usually what you are looking to do is done with much longer CB/HAM/GMRS radios.... not an oem 31" head unit antenna.

So no, most on the Jeep forum haven't considered this... atleast not for the oem antenna.

People have had issues with stubby antennas, but if you research and read the reviews, you will quickly see some out perform others.

I went with this one... it's a compromise between the super stubby and the oem(31"). Mine is a 18" . I have noticed very little loss, but when I do, it's in really rural areas, but overall it has not been an issue. The seller also offers a 21", along with many other sizes.

Do you have seller info? This may be the way to go.

This is what I did. ļø¾ļø¾ļø¾ Worked very well.

I used shrink wrap to make my antenna black. You need two sizes, one for the mast and the other for the base. You could also use Plasti-Dip or just paint it. I like Rustoleum high heat for that, as it has a lot of ceramic solids in it and makes for a nice matte black finish.

Perhaps you are right. The more I read these replies and see several people using this a s a height tool, perhaps just making it black will fix my initial perception (as opposed to reception). No one has mentioned an issue of damage from the antenna striking the body or windshield, so maybe there is no ā€œproblem ā€œ. Thanks for the forthrightness.
If you off road much in tight trees you'll likely experience it smacking your windshield or paint.

I use a hook to hold my antenna down to fit into garages. I use para cord swagged into an electrical eyelet and screwed into the sport bar trim mount. Let the cord come up through the door with an open metal loop on the end. No leaks. I only stow the antenna when in garages though. I let branches have their way with the antenna outside. Itā€™s been smacked and abused for years, no damage yet.

This antenna is for HF. When I was just running a 4 watt CB, I had a multiplexor on it and got the best AM/FM reception Iā€™ve ever had. But now that I have a 90 watt 10 meter radio connected to it, itā€™s just for the switchable 10m and CB radios. Too much power to risk having the multiplexor fail and sending a ton of power into the uconnect head unit. I relocated the AM/FM antenna to the tailgate. 2m/70cm is on the drivers side.
