I have an intermittent cylinder 3 misfire and disappearing coolant, I scope the cylinder and #3 has been steam cleaned and looks brand new. I started tearing into it today to replace the head gasket, and noticed some wear starting on an intake cam lobe and another lobe very discolored. I'll be replacing that cam, when I took the driver side apart, the intake cam has some discoloration to it and I wanted the experts opinion on if it should be replaced. I'm leaning towards yes, because I am already in there.

Here's the passenger side that needs to be replaced.

And here's the driver side I am questioning, the top lobe in the pic.

And then, while I am in there, obviously rockers, and an oil cooler, anything else? I'm at 87k miles.

I just ran out and snapped 2 more photos. Here's the driver side, looking at it again, the exhaust lobes look like they had some heat in them too.

The passenger side exhaust looks fine to me.

The oil filter was spotless. But, I've only owned this jeep for a few months, I see why I got a deal on it now.

I ended up ordering a new set of cams, rockers and 'lifters' for it, as well as a oil cooler.

You can definitely see which cylinder had the head gasket leak

wow. How quickly was the coolant dropping? My cylinder 1 misfire did not have much, if any, steam cleaning at all. After a few weeks, it seemed like the coolant dropped a bit, but not super noticeable especially if you weren't really looking closely/frequently.

I put in maybe 1/2" of coolant in the reservoir 3 times over 6 months. So not very much, I had a misfire light back in April when I bought it, and 1 in September, but other than that, never got a light, but I could smell coolant in the exhaust on overnight cold starts.

That's about how I would describe mine, including the coolant smell on cold starts, and also a rough idle that would smooth out after a few minutes. I was expecting more of a steam cleaning.

Mine had a rough idle occasionally, but not everytime and cleared up pretty quick.

I bought this used with 80k on it, i now see why I got a 'deal' on it. It had plugs swapped out at 78k, I'm assuming in an attempt to fix the misfire, when it didn't work, they traded it in and I was dumb enough to buy it.

I just dropped the heads off at my local shop, they said they see a ton of 3.6l heads and know what to do. I should have them back this week. I ordered all of my parts from All Mopar Parts last Thursday, I'm hoping they ship soon so I am good to go when I get the heads back.

I totaled my daily driver last week hitting a deer, the insurance gave me a rental till this Friday, I hope to have my Jeep back together by then, so I don't have to pay to keep the rental.

thats crazy....
I just dropped my heads off last week, they said they see a lot and this "engine is junk". I also ordered all of my parts from All Mopar Parts last Thursday.
I've been a little less motivated to get this up and running, but it will happen.

I have no motivation at all, but if I can fix this quick, it keeps me from having to buy a car to daily drive, so I guess I have a little motivation.

It wasn't too hard to strip down, the timing cover was difficult to remove, and a couple of connector clip locks broke, but that was about it.

I'm trying to decide if I should replace my aux battery, or just delete it when I put everything back together.

Delete what? I was asking about a cam shaft, can't delete that.

Do your engine a favor and get an ARP stud kit for it.
