Toyo has a 255/80r17 61 lbs, Geolander 255/80r17 53.4 lbs. Both MT's both are offered in E load only.
Was looking at AT3’s- 255/80/E - 285/70/C . To further confuse things just noticed the 285/70/E was also listed 55 lbs and the OWL/E at 53 lbs. I Give Up 🙄

I was doing some research and noticed some of the weights seemed odd, e.g., an E load tire heavier than a C load tire. idk? 🤔

By the way... is sound level on the road a concern?

Not for me but if that is a concern I would recommend AT tires. Personally, if I don't hear a little rumble, I didn't buy an aggressive enough tire.

I got wildpeak at3s when my bfg ko2s wore out in 23k miles. Disappointed in the ko2s tread life.

Love my wildpeaks! So much so that I bought a set for my TJ. I got e load 315 70 r17 for the JLUR. Rides great. I worried about the e load but I don't notice and ride issues on or off road. My TJ are c load 31". My JL has 25k miles on the new tires and plenty of tread left.

That noise from a tire is energy. The sound of high rolling resistance.

All I need is a little more energy from my 1-ton tires and you guys are gonna be so jealous.

Check it out, the future is near 😉 👇

No real concern about road noise. I’ve been told my current tires are pretty loud but I don’t seem to notice it or I can’t hear as well as others can. Probably a bit of both.

The poll is overwhelmingly in favor of the 285s so I may just pull the trigger on those. Maybe I’m just way overestimating the effect that added weight is going to have? Seems those that run them are very happy with them and I can’t find a lot of complaints about huge penalties to MPG, ride quality, acceleration and braking, noise, etc.

Everyone's missed the best choice -- the Toyo Open Country A/T III in 34x10.5R17 (or the KO2 but you ruled out BFG). 55 pounds. It's a 265, so wider than the 255 but not as much as the 285. Load range D so it's durable but not as harsh as the 255 in load E.

33.5" diameter so it's larger than the 255/80 and the 285/70.

Interesting, I’ll look into this one. Thanks.

edit: Never saw the Toyos in this size since TireRack doesn’t list them. I saw the BFGs but they are significantly more expensive so I just assumed everything in that size was $$$. Are you personally running these?

I'm not running them yet, but the size will likely be my next tire (either the Toyo or the BFG).

BFG was the original creator of the size and said that they designed it specifically for a stock or stock-ish JK, and it shows. The width is perfect, narrow enough to avoid excess weight or heavy steering efforts, but wide enough to fit well on 7.5" stock Jeep rims and to allow airing down slightly more than 255s.

The D load range gives you three physical sidewall plies (at least in the KO2), which is an increase over 2 ply C load tires, but avoids the stiffness and extra weight of E.

The size fits without needing a lift, rubbing on control arms, and fits the stock tire carrier.

All of this is to say I always wonder why more people don't run 34x10.5R17. It's so obviously a great Jeep size. Now, BFG KO2s were the only tire in the size for many years, and they charged a stiff premium, but last year Toyo started making this size as well and they're priced much more reasonably. The A/T III is by all accounts a solid off-road all terrain tire.

Discount Tire has them, and I imagine anywhere they sell Toyos can order them:

I didn't miss it. That was actually my first choice in tire size. I couldn't believe Toyo didn't offer that size tire in a Mud Terrain, very disappointing! I may end up with the Toyo AT tire in the future, but I love aggressive MT tires. Great choice BTW! Do you know if BFG makes an MT in that size? (34x10.5r17) My only other option is 285/75r17 = 33.8x11.2 even in this size MT choices are limited. Toyo does make one in an MT, C-load, but I would prefer no more than 10.5 wide.
