Does anyone have any real world experience running 5.13 gears on a JLUR manual transmission with 35s? I think I will probably want to go 37s eventually, maybe 2 years down the line. But for now I would like to try running 5.13 gears with 35s.

According to the calculator, I should be at about 2500 RPM in 6th at 70 MPH, which doesn't sound so bad. But looking to get some advice from someone who has run 5.13s with 35s.

Thoughts?

I have a manual and I’m running 35’s with 4.88 gears. I love it, it was the best thing I’ve done. I too plan on going with 37’s in the next year or so. I think you’ll be fine with 5.13’s and 35’s. I love that I actually have a useful 6th gear.

Thanks for the info. Yeah I think 4.88 is probably perfect for 35s with the manual transmission, but I'm curious if 5.13 will be a bit too much with 35s, or if it's close enough.

5.13s sound like overkill to me. That was the ideal setup for the JK on the 3.8L, but you were having to make up for some serious dogshit gearing and the abysmal transmission options. I'm running 37s on the stock 4.10s with the auto and I don't feel like I've lost that much power. Granted, you're running the manual, but the JL is tuned incredibly well with both transmissions. I wouldn't go beyond 4.88.

I wouldn't do it with Dana 44 axles because the pinion for a 5.13 gear ratio is really small. I would stick with 4.88 if you're not upgrading axles, but then I wouldn't run larger than 35" tires on a Dana 44 either.

With the manual 5:13 make it tolerable off road .and alot better on, unless you like long drives over 75 Mph.

If you’re only regearing for the future 37’s, why not wait until you get them to regear? By then you’ll def know what you want/need for sure.

Save the cash for right now bro

Unless you got someone on the hook for an awesome deal that is...

We run the 5.13 with 37s on our 6 speed. Real world rpms at 70 is approx 2450ish. The calculators showed it would’ve been closer to 2200-2300 if I remember correct. We get 16-17 mpg combined. Love this combo. For 35s it’ll be peppy but highway mileage will be a little worse but not harm in that besides a small hit in mileage. I think the pinion strength is still great in these JLs

YUP, I ran 5.38 YUKON gears in my '08 JKUR--for over 6 years--on STOCK DANA 44's--

The PInion isn't that much smaller--although it does really reduce in size on the DANA 35's-

Shouldn't have any problems with the NEW DANA 44's/with the 5.13 gears, just do a proper break !

Good luck

I can't stand the stock gear ratio with 35s. Rarely sees 5th and 6th is a fantasy.

JFYI, I ran 5.38s on a D44 with heavy bias ply 38s, chromoly axles, ARB front, Detroit rear and 227:1 gearing and wheeled the living piss out of that rig. Granted, it was lighter than a JLUR, but breaking pinions was NEVER an issue in spite of the theory that having chromoly axles would move the weak link to the R&P. I broke 1 axle at the ujoint on that set up (tigged caps) and spun a cap after the weld broke...wheeled it like that 26 weekends per year (often both days) for about 3-4 years.

This whole pinion tooth count thing is overstated. If you set up your gears correctly (I normally set mine up on the tighter side of the spec so the backlash can't cause as much driveline wind up, which IMO, is what generally breaks things anyway)....you don't have that much risk of breaking R&Ps. Besides, it's more likely to break teeth off the ring than the pinion anyway due to the fact that torque multiplication always takes place AFTER the last gear drive.
Finally some levity to this conversation. I wonder if all the nannies claiming low gears are weak have ever actually broken a pinion, or an axle, or anything else for that matter.

It’s not “small” but it’s definitely short on teeth
