How is that even possible?

I wouldn't fault the Bolt lock for the employee's ham-fisted efforts.
Oh, let me explain. I typically just hand them the key. I handed him my fob with the key on it, assuming he had the intelligence to take the key off. The first indication of what he had done wrong was when he tried to fit the key in with the other keys on the fob.

I have the Bolt hood lock and Mopar gas cap lock. Both easy DIY jobs.

I got my Bolt Hood Lock installed today. I had to improvised regarding installing the locking mechanism to the vehicle. I thought I had the appropriately sized pneumatic Rivet Gun doohickey for the 1/4" rivets. So, I elected to use bolts, flat and star washers, and flare nuts to bolt in the locking mechanism. Since, the mechanism assembly really isn't load bearing, I didn't see any reason why wait and order the Rivet Gun things, so I went the bolts, etc. I'm sure there won't be a future problem with the bolts and nuts, it's not going anywhere.

As a few of some previous posts stated, coding the key was a little challenging but, it does work fine now.

Speaking of challenging, my Warn Winch is just an inch or two away from my Grille. It was very tight in removing the screws holding the grille panel in the grille and removing the grille panel but got er dun.

Onto my next project. I'm going to install/mount an ARB Twin Air Compressor in the engine compartment. That'll keep me lugging the Air Compressor out of the back of the Jeep when I air up.

I also have the Bolt hood lock and concur with all of the positive comments. It’s relatively easy to install. Two things that I recommend buying for the install: 1) plastic clip removal tools (about $5) and 1/4” rivet tool ($20). Prices are from Harbor Freight.

And as a less than the $20 option if you don't want to do the Rivet thing because you more than likely won't ever need a Rivet tool for a 1/4" rivet, the screws and stuff were only $12.43 from the local True Value Hardware, and if you have a winch in front of your grille, unless you're up to removing the winch, you will never get the Rivet Tool on the two front rivets anyways.

The Clip and/or Trim Removal Tool definitely does help, but the Snap-On A1618 tool these days are a tad more than $5.00. Snap-On wants $49.25 however, you can find the same Snap-On A1618 tool on eBay for $42.77, not including shipping, for a pre-owned tool. I recommend don't buy the eBay item because they want $37.73 for shipping from the United Kingdom.

So, just go with the $5.00 tool. It'll do the same thing popping out your little plastic doo-hickeys.

Someone please remind me why they don't make a Bolt locking gas cap for the JL? I would prefer it to the Mopar locking gas cap, which when I got it, you had to key it yourself, step by step. The Bolt system of keying it in is far better.

I installed the Bolt Hood Lock two or three years ago and like it a lot.
Makes all the difference to me not to try to keep track of another key only for that one lock.
The key works very smoothly and the quality is apparent.
I've since bought other Bolt products (for receiver hitches, etc.) for these same reasons.

For the Bolt hood lock, I used a bolt/nut/star washer I had on hand rather than buy yet another rivet setter. Holding the bolt and nut in place for the install is fiddly and you may lose the bits once or twice, so I can see why they specified a rivet there.

When I purchased online, I thought the Bolt hood lock was a little expensive because I only saw the under hood box lock. So I was surprised it comes with a grill screen and you replace part of the grill. The grill screen you install has the molded in accommodation for the lock, installs securely, and looks and feels OEM. Good product, well thought out.

Just thinking out loud here, but the Bolt's lock cylinder is considerably larger than that on the Mopar gas cap...which has fairly limited real estate to accommodate a lock cylinder of any size. That might be why the gas cap can't accommodate a self-keying feature.

Look at how bulky the cylinder is on your Bolt receiver hitch lock for a clearer illustration of the size difference.

I enjoyed the task of assembling the Mopar gas cap lock cylinder to match my key, but I understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Installed the Bolt on our 2021 JL Sport. Bought the inserts and tool on Amazon. Install was easy. Does it's job.

The Bolt hood lock was one of the first things I did to my JL. As Nokones mentioned previously, I also elected to just bolt it down instead of riveting because I already had the hardware on hand and didn't see the need to purchase a riveter. Works just as good and it was easy to install. This lock and the locking MOPAR gas cap are among my favorite additions to the Jeep and highly recommend both.
