It has been almost 2 years since I let my daughter take over, using the Jeep. She turned 16, and needed a vehicle for school and track. The price of used cars were stupid expensive, with high mileage, and letting her use a Big 4x4 diesel truck in the tight school parking lots wasn't a good choice. So, I sucked it up and handed the key fob over to her with rules.
She just graduated from High School, and I took back the Jeep. She did get another car for graduation, that is better on the gas, and more reliable, since it is new. I will say, she took better care at keeping it clean than I did. Also, not a scratch, dent, door ding, or scruff on a tire. I felt bad about taking it back, because she loved driving it everywhere. I know she would rather drive a 6 yr old Wrangler, than a new Kia Forte, but she isnt griping. She knows she is lucky to have been given a vehicle to drive.

Me, on the other hand, I am having to get reacquainted with the Wrangler, all over again. Looking it over, inside and out, it looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor, inside and out. So, I'm back in the JL saddle again.

My son wants mine in 4 years. I'm hoping used prices will come down by then so we can find another one.

what an awesome story. Go drive that Kia. If she took such good care of the rig she should keep it. 👍🏼
I disagree, if she loved it that much once she can afford it she can go buy her own.

Yes, and No.
I bought the Jeep as a present to myself, in celebration of no more child support to my
ex-wife. When my youngest daughter(with my new wife of 20 years) goes away for college, she needs something dependable, and that gets good gas mileage. If she still has the love of Jeeps when she graduates from college, she can buy one then, and trade the Kia in. . Plus, I have a hard time getting into and out of the Kia. Too tall and broad shouldered.

Great story.

I taught two kids how to drive on one of my old TJs, because I thought that every guy should be able to drive a manual transmission. Still do, though the skill is a little less relevant every day.

This may seem irrational to some, but after many years of responding to "highway salad" I can tell you that the vehicle with the most lug nuts almost always wins in a crash -- so I'd prefer to have my kids driving a 5000 pound jeep than a 3500 pound Camry (or whatever). There are other variables influencing vehicle safety, of course, but people are getting dumber, faster, and more impaired every day, and the only effective hedge against random idiots is vehicle weight, crush zones, and air bags. I was willing to pay the fuel cost differential as part of my effort to protect the kids. If I had my druthers, my kids and grandkids would all be driving around in Toyota Sequoias and Chevy Suburbans, though Subaru wagons do amazingly well for a lighter vehicle.

She is still circling like a Turkey vulture for my TJ. Helped some by putting her in a black Grand Cherokee limited.

Sounds like my daughters story. She was driving one of the first JLs in the area ro high school every day. For two years. Then we bought her a used civic. She was sad to let the wrangler go but now realizes how much gas costs now that she gets to pay for her own lol.

I'm done buying cars for my kids. She now has a new Kia Forte, to get her through college. What she does after that is up to her.

Haha! Our daughter was given a VW City Golf in high school. She drove it all through university. She still drives it today as a RN. Her SO is a PEng and he still has his Taco he got in HS. They spent their savings buying a condo on the top floor of a HR with a fantastic view of the city and renovating it a couple years ago. All on their own. 50-50. She came by last week and did a clay bar job and sealed her paint which still looks new. Still swaps to winters that she has stored here as well.

Our older son was given a VW Golf in HS. But he crashed it. Then sold him a stick Corolla which he resold for the same many years later after he replaced the clutch. He drove that until he moved away 3 years ago to work in high tech paying SF as an elec engineer. In a couple of years he will probably move back and buy a condo or house all cash. His SO got her PhD in Pharma. They have a 5 year plan and it is going along as expected. They drive a plain Kia which works well in the big bad city. He also did a clay bar and seal plus put in a new ignition coil and new plugs after looking at the OBD code. He has been changing his oil for many years.

My perspective has always been to teach them how to catch a fish vs giving them a fish. Am very proud of all their accomplishments and very happy they are well on their way in life. One is turning 30 the other 28. Myself started my own consulting business at 28 and had everything paid off by 30. So have been quite lucky with wife and health and kids.

No doubt your daughter will appreciate you helping her get a reliable ride.
