2020 JLUR now has a 2” lift and I’m trying to decide between the 285x 75x 17 or the 35x11.5x 17 Toyo Open Country AT3. Jeep has factory steel bumpers. Jeep is my every day driver as well as trail rig when I can get out.

I want to use the stock tire carrier as well. The 35’s weigh about 62 lbs. and the 285 about 60lbs.

For those who run these size tires, do they fit the spare tire carrier without issue? I understand I may need to raise the 3rd brake light.

The stock tires are about 51lbs. Not sure 10 more pounds will destroy the hinges.

Please share your thoughts and experience.

I have 35-inch General Grabbers on my Sahara. They weigh 65 lbs each + 25 lbs for the Quadratec CJ Retro alloy = 90 lbs combined.

The 35-inch spare wouldn’t clear the bumper with the stock carrier, so I got a Smittybilt adapter: it lifts up the spare two inches off the bumper and away from the tailgate. My understanding is Rubicons have a different carrier. The adapter adds another 10 lbs.

The tailgate is rated to withstand a maximum of 85 lbs., so I got a tailgate reinforcement to be on the safe side.

Here’s a breakdown:

Tailgate reinforcement - Mopar knockoff: $110 on Amazon
Smittybilt adapter: $80 at CJ Pony
Total: $190

This is the “Mopal” (knockoff) tailgate reinforcement I got on Amazon.

It is made of aluminum. It looks, feels and works just like the real deal but for 1/4 of the price. It even has an indentation for the Mopar Parts badge, which I got on eBay for another $12!

This is the Smittybilt adapter: $78 at CJ Pony; free shipping. Those “wings” on the sides slide 1 inch fore/backwards to adjust the bump stops so your spare is not wobbling.

A 35'' Toyo MT spare (large 35 as 35s go) fits perfectly on the stock rear carrier on my JLUR without reinforcement. it's lightly touches the stock steel bumper and provides additional support I assume. Doesn't affect opening/closing of the gate and hasn't made a peep in 1.5 years. The 3rd brake light just moves up and down so that's no problem.

I will be moving to a hinge replacement/gate style carrier soon to carry a 37.

I also have a two inch lift and am using the stock wheels that came with my 2021 Rubicon. I put on 315 R70/17s (Falken Wildpeak) and had to use the Smitty Bilt relocation bracket to mount the spare. This is my daily driver and I'm very happy with the ride.

285/75R17 will work fine for the carrier, bumper and the wheels without rubbing. 35x11.5R17 may touch the steel bumper for the spare (will be OK on plastic bumper). Either will be OK as far as weight, but you can always do the hinge reinforcement as suggested - all of them are very easy to install.

I put the Mopar hinge reinforcement on my JLUR to run 37" KO2 (~70 lbs), but don't feel it added that much strength. Felt about the same with and without it.

Good luck.

Have a link to the reinforcement?

OK, so I flip flopped and am going with Toyo Open Country AT3's in 35x11.5x17's.
I am considering those tires in that size for my stock rims. I also have a 2021 JLUR.
Please reply with how well they handle off road conditions, and where they rub if they rub at all on full turn and full suspension compression.

Oh. I saw you have a 2" lift, so you won't be rubbing the fenders. But if you rub anywhere with those stock rims, please let us know.

Will do, scheduled install is this Saturday morning. I do not anticipate any rubbing at all being they are 11.5" wide.

I am really hoping the Toyo 35x11.5x17 AT3’s I’m having installed today will fit the stock tire carrier. I moved the 3rd brake light up already. Fingers crossed.
