I'm sure we're going to see many unusual things in EV range extenders. After all, they only have one job. To power a generator with rather static demand. They don't need to handle the wide variety of power demands that a driven vehicle has. That's all buffered by the battery.

So they are going to zero in on the most efficient way to spin a generator at its most efficient RPM and that's it. I'm sure that as efficiency gets dialed in eyebrows will be raised as to what's added, what's removed and what is completely different than a vehicle engine.
