Hello I currently live in southern New Mexico and had a question about the octane of gasoline that I need to put in my jeep wrangler JL. Jeep recommends an 87 octane Here in southern New Mexico I have only 86 and 88 octane available. Which one of these should I be using in my Islander. TIA

The electronics will likely adjust for the 86 but I would put 88. Low octane when hot or under load creates pinging and long term issues.
Do you have Costco there? Good gas and I think it is either 87 or 91. Worth the membership just for the gas savings.

I have about 20k on the vehicle and have been running 86. If I switch on the next tank of gas can I prevent these ping and long term issues.

I do not have access to a Costco. The closest one is an hour away in El Paso. We have a Murphy Express, Texaco, Shell, and our local Allsups.

Thank you, I will from here on. Are the odds against me for possible damage at this point

Just fill half the tank with 86 and the other half with 88 and you're good to go with 87 ;)

I'm also in New Mexico and used to have 87 at a few stations as their lowest octane, now 86 is the lowest w/ no 87. I've run 86 for the last 1.5 yrs without issue, but run higher octane once I get to an area where 87 is available. No pinging w/ my motor, at 30k miles now.

I wish we had ethanol-free gas though, hell, I'd run 85 if it didn't have that crap corn filler :(

I agree there are no stations in Alamogordo that carry 87. Murphy express I believe has the ethanol-free but did not consider using it.

I live down the road from there and have run whatever dishwater they call regular here with “0” issues in both my 3.6 and the boss’ 2.0. You’ll be fine with either.

I live outside of Abq and use 85/86 in a 3.6 and 2.0 JL. I haven't had any issues. 28 K on the 3.6 and 19K on the 2.0.
