I see different threads discussing the need not to overfill the JL, but does anyone know where the reduction happened?

The upper and lower oil pans are the same (according to what I see at various parts stores), so what is different?

I have a JL and a JK. I will take pictures of both oil pans tonight and upload. I think it is a complete redesign of the bottom aluminum cradle of the engine.

I've wondered about this too. It would be nice to regain that lost oil capacity just by changing the lower pan and maybe the oil pickup.

PNs are the same on Rock Auto but I don't see how that can be right.

Just ask @cosine he knows!
I checked rockauto too, and the upper & lower oil pan sections have the same part #, maybe the JLs dipstick is just an inch longer :(

The upper or lower or both? If the lower, do you know if the JK pan fits the JL?
“Windage-tray weight was slashed by 19 percent and front-cover weight was cut by 5 percent. The oil pan was redesigned from a two-piece to a single-piece pan and the sump was reduced from a 6-quart fill to a 5-quart fill – resulting in an overall 5-pound weight savings compared with the previous generation Pentastar V-6 engine."

Wow! Those guys are serious about weight loss.

So, overall it was a reduction in the sump size meaning a slightly deeper pan will regain the 1QT loss...

A deeper oil pan is only good if it has a longer oil pick up to match
Agreed, though from what I saw of the pan size, it would not take much depth to add 1QT and I would opine the pickup depth would not have to be increased.

I don’t understand how the JK and JL could all have the same part number upper and lower oil pans. What oil pan do you upgrade to ?

Maybe like most of the dealers we've been complaining about, rockauto is still using JK referenced sources??
If not, then there's a bigger problem that has yet to be ID'd.
