I'm having this really odd issue where the shifter will occasionally want to hang up coming out of 1st gear and then won't want to go into to 2nd. I'm generally very gentle with it and will never force it into a gear. Does this sound like a synchro issue? I typically thought that synchro issues would cause difficulty going into a gear but the binding coming out of first is what has me confused.

Here is a thought...and something I have had a problem with from time to time. Are you lifting the reverse lock-out ring when shifting? If you are, you could be slipping into the reverse gate (not actually going into reverse since you are pulling down on the gear shifter). If not, definitely take it in and report back what was found.

That’s a great thought and may have definitely been part of it. I took care to stay off of the lock out ring but still had a couple hints of the issue today. Seemingly less frequent but still there.

I’m going to make an appointment and see if anything comes of it. Little worried that it’s a bad synchro or dragging clutch as I pay more attention to the issue. Going to do some trouble shooting tonight to see if I can reliably replicate the problem.

I hope this isn't too stupid of a question, but here goes:

Does the JL with a manual transmission have the 2 battery set up like the automatic does?

I really don't like that set up...enough to maybe choose a manual over an automatic.

    Any help is appreciated.

Yes the batteries are set up the same way but the ESS only operates if your in neutral and you let the clutch out. I don’t find it entrusive at all. I use it when I want to not every time the Jeep comes to a stop. The only time I turn ESS off is when I’m in a fast food line or something like that. Otherwise I just leave it alone.

So it shuts the engine down on the manual too. Wow.

I was surprised how benign it was in the test drive today, esp after all the ess hate on here.

I didn't think it was THAT big of a deal. Weird, but, ok.
