It’s actually good to run the 4wd once in a while. Keeps things happy

Any serious wheeler knows the advantage of engine braking. Minor brake/gas inputs rather than constant mashing on the brake.
Exactly what I have been getting at! I hate feeling like I am riding the brakes all the time. The 4Lo option and either the duck button or just manually selecting a gear gives me better engine braking and also is a torque multiplier when I do need to add a little throttle.

Incidentally, the "Off Road +" button on the Rubicons changing the throttle mapping as well in 4wd. I like the change.

This is all why I went manual.. backfired on me lol. A 5.13 1st gear, 5.13 axle gears, and 4:1 transfer case allows you to control that like a q-tip in your inner ear.

Unforutanately Jeep screwed us with the manual trans/clutch.

Rubicons have the auto 4wd options as well.

What's the "duck" button?
Hill Decent Control

Some say it looks like a duck, hence the "Duck Button"

Not sure if this is even a thought, but going in 4Lo dropped my drivetrain temps a bit while driving unloaded uphill.
This is in my 3.6 JT:
“So creeping along @1000rpm in 2WD my coolant was around 220, transmission ~210, and oil 230. Air temp 71.
Going into 4Lo meant I was in 4th or 5th gear, but engine @2000rpm and temps about 200, 205, and 210 respectively. So like 10-20 degree drops.”

I was curious if increased rpm’s would be worse than the increased leverage. Leverage won out.

That isn't HDC. That Speed Select Trac. HDC is a jeep going downhill. They're close in how they work but not the same.

I don't see a duck though. Lol.
Oh yes, you are correct, I just grabbed the first image I thought was the HDC button, correct picture follows:

I know ;)

It's because one of the first threads I participated in here at this forum was with @DavidArmen where we discussed which vehicle got HDC vs SSC. It was pretty good if you ever find it.

If you will be on the trail for a longer period doing overland travel, airing down to 15-18 PSI will go a long way toward smoothing out the ride but probably isn’t worth the time if you’re just checking out random roads to see where they go unless they’re really bad washboard.
I was gonna say, airing down is actually the first thing we do.

Idaho is known for our dirt roads that are all god-awful washboard, for miles and miles. 25 is good, 20 is better, 15 is best. For us this is dependent on if we have a convenient air up option once on pavement.

I don't think you are correct, particularly with the 4:1 RockTrac transfer case. Perhaps they used to be, or maybe without the 4:1. Someone will check the Jeep builder and find out I bet.

Well, I suppose I could walk 30 feet to my 21 JLUR that has it to confirm again. Maybe you're right, I have only owned it since March of 21. The new ones have it as well. I don't need to check the Jeep builder. Promise.

Nobody's suggesting you mash the brakes. Just put it in 1st in 4H if there is no other reason to be in 4L and gently apply braking as necessary. Engine braking for the majority of the effort with brakes gently applied to make up any deficit.

Interesting. Do you have the 4:1 RockTrak?
And my '21 JLUR...not an option.
