I want to re-gear up from my stock 4:10's. My dilemma is 4:88 or 5:13.
I'm rolling on 37" ridge grappler tires that actually measure 35.77" @ 28psi.

I do trail ride and moderate wheeling, my concern is interstate driving.
Currently I'm taching 1900 rpm at 75 mph. Which of course is on flat highway without any incline.
Even 5th is a struggle to pass anyone if need be... unless I drop to 4th.

I think I'd like to be around 2300 rpm at interstate speeds in 6th. So maybe I'm leaning 5:13.
Is there any downside to going that tall besides the gas mileage?
Any added heat, wear and tear etc?
Thanks in advance for any know-how or expertise.

Assuming you have a 6 speed like us. 5.13 is the ticket. We’re around 2400-2450 at 70. Combined mileage is 16-17 avg. Does great off road and terrific driving characteristics now.

Awesome thanks. That’s about what I’m getting currently in 4th. So I’ll get a feel for it.

I run 4.88's on 37's. I chose the 4.88 with the 6-spd mainly because I wheel A LOT and I wanted the extra insurance of the thicker pinion. I'm from NC and my Jeep has been to California twice and wheeled everywhere. It's a great combo. The 5.13's will serve you well, too. If you're asking for downsides, the thinner pinion (Dana 44) is the only one I can think of.

I'm on 4.88s with 35s and wouldn't mind going 5.13s with my manual. I'd suggest 5.13s with 37s. You'll love it!

I'd go with the 5.13's , it's what I went with and the crawl ratio is amazing. I wheel tons but because if the great crawl ratio I can go easy on the gas pedal which helps avoid breaking things

The math says that 4.88’s are plenty. Three data points, currently running 37’s, if 33’s were stock, and stock gearing is 4.10, then.

37 / 33 = 1.12.

1.12 X 4.10 = 4.6. 4.88’s are the closest thing and a bit bigger.

Here’s a good discussion as well, he went with 4.88’s.

I blew up my rear D44 (Rubicon) R&P running 5.38's on 37's in my JK. I just threw 37's on my 2.0 JLUR and getting 13-14 mpg because it's never in the right gear anymore (and weight/lift/winch). I probably won't re-gear (as power is fine and it's cheaper to just run some 315's for daily use), but I have heard other folks restoring most of their original gas mileage by swapping to 4.88's. I think over that would be unnecessary unless you are running 40's, which probably isn't ideal on stock axles anyway.

Out of curiosity how are gears 1/2 with this setup? I'm thinking of doing 5.13s also. 1 is pretty low, so I was thinking it may be more a "granny" gear, and I may be able to start off in 2. What is your experience? Thanks!

I run 5.13s in my 6sp as well. I think 1 is usefull depending on the situation. Starting at an incline, i would use 1. Starting at a decline, i could start in 2. For us: my wife has the 2.0, so we havent seen a need to regear on her 37s at all. For my 6sp, i felt is was necessary and 5.13s as Brett mentioned, seem to be perfect so far.

I drive slow and don’t get in much of a hurry. From any stand still I start in 1st. I’ll take it to about 10, then run 2nd to 20. Works great. I shift between 2-3k.

I personally won’t start in 2nd unless I’m already rolling. I think you have to slip the clutch more than I like starting from a stop.
