Hello so i want to regear as i recently went with a 3.5 inch lift on 37's (i plan on staying with 37's maximum 38's)

Can you guys enlighten me the differences between 4.88 and 5.13??

The only thing i know is:

5.13
- produces more power on the start

4.88
- more gas efficient on highway

I went 4.88s when I went 3.5" and 37s. It is basically the same as it was with the stock 33s and 4.10s. MPG is actually a little better than stock.

I kind of wish I went 5.13 just for that little extra grunt.

If it helps at all, the way I determined to go with 5.13 was pretty simple. My rig had no issues running down the highway in 7th w/4.10s at 80mph. The RPM with 5.13 was the same at 80mph in 8th. So, i get all my gears back and added a ton of power around town. I don't have many miles on the new gears to answer about fuel mileage, seems to be in the 17-18 range right now.

Another thing to keep in mind about gear calculators is that they generally straight up calculate the change in tire diameter and gears. What they don't take into consideration is the greatly increased rolling weight of the larger tires or even heavier wheels, if they're replaced (such as beadlocks). They also don't factor in the reduced aerodynamics of larger and wider tires and the increased wind resistance from the lift that comes with those big tires. Look at a stock Rubicon from the front, and compare that with a lifted Jeep on 37s, and you'll see there' a lot more frontage fighting the wind. And then there's the increased rolling resistance with wider and more aggressive tires. Looking at all these factors is why the gear calculators don't tell the whole story of gear change needs. They're merely a starting point.

I have a 2020 JLUR with the 2.0 and 8-speed, and I went with the 5.13 gears. I love the way it drives!

Oh, and if you research it enough, you'll find many more people on 37s with 4.88s who wished they'd went with 5.13s than you will the other way.
