For reference:

I regeared my Sport that has the manual 6 speed and 33” tires to 4.56 gears. I have not wheeled with this yet (still waiting on the damn front driveshaft for my new front axle). I have 1,000 on road miles to date. 35” tires will come next, but I thought I’d post what it’s like with the 33s.

Overall it is terrific on road, and much more fun to drive. The gaps between gears are no longer noticeable and 6th is usable as low as 60mph. I can even skip shift (1-3, 4-6th) easily.

1st is short (about 25mph at redline).
2nd is short (50mph @ redline) but a blast.
3rd goes to 75 mph or more and pulls great.
6th gear is 60mph at about 2000 revs.
6th gear is 72mph at 2500 revs.

My mpg is about the same, possibly 1/2 mile less per gallon: just got 19.1 mpg on a 300 mile trip of 80/20 highway/city, which is about my baseline.

Hopefully this might come in useful to someone.

Did you consider 4.88? I have a Sahara and currently running 33" and thinking about getting 35". Just going from factory to aftermarket wheels and tires made the Jeep feel slower and shifting sucks now, almost never use 6th. I was thinking of doing 4.88 instead of 4.56.

I did, and I think you can’t go wrong with 4.88’s, but 4.56’s are perfect for me.
I do a lot of highway driving and wanted 2500 revs at 75mph in 6th, which is just about where I’ll be with 35’s (72 mph now at 2500 RPM with 33’s). The on highway driving is great with the 4.56’s.

I haven’t wheeled it yet (still waiting on the front driveshaft!!), but it should be decent for what I do. If I need lower crawl ratios, I’ll swap in a rubicon t-case.

Ok newbie question, why the front driveshaft?

The geometry of the Prorock requires it. If you go with the ultimate Dana44 I believe you can reuse the stock driveshaft.

Holy that thing must rip,

I have the same 4.56 and manual

But have 315/70r17 duratracs (which are a very small and light “35”)

And i think its perfect or even a little too much, I can’t imagine having smaller but kudos to you.

Im going against you and may throw a truss and a locker in the m186 and see how long it lasts, but you’ll definitely have a solid reliable rig with the dyna

Keep the manual alive!

Nice to hear it’s a good combo with the 35’s!
And yes, it a blast to drive now.
Did your rev hang disappear? Mine’s been gone for the nearly 2k miles since regearing.

Yes I believe it has, been awhile so I don’t really remember.

Have you lost your stop/start and back up camera yet?

@Jeepjunkie - can you give some feedback on wheeling with your regear? I’ve got 35’s on my 6-speed manual and it’s a dog with stock gears. I’m getting it regeared to 4.88 in 2 weeks and can’t wait! I struggle with it mostly when off road and climbing. Stalling in 4lo in particular. Just looking for feedback on your experience as there aren’t too many JL manuals who have regeared to ask for feedback. :)

@Az-jewel
I still have my 33s (getting 35s after covid) with 4.56 gears and it’s awesome.
Much less stalling while wheeling, almost never really unless high-centered or something. I love it. I think it’s perfect and the 4.56s will still be really good with 35s. 4.88s should be awesome. I really like it on the highway, and think 4.88s and 35s might be the perfect set up.

My next step after the 35s will be a new tcase with 4.1 ratios.

So I’m in the same boat as many of you.

Sport-s
D44 w/LSD rear
D30 front
3.45 gears (stock stuff)
285/70r17 KO2 (rubicon take-offs)
Rubicon suspension and fenders

I really don’t like the way the gearing is on this thing. At some point I plan on going to 35s, but not for a little while. I’ve been reading around and it seems like 4.56 or 4.88 is the way to go. Just a little iffy about going 4.88 with 33s and highway driving. Would love to hear your thoughts. I’d like to be able to use 6th gear around 60~ish. Seems that 4.56 for sure will get me there. I’ve played around with the gear tool as well but would like real world experience.

Thanks

I’m a sport similarly equipped to begin with but I have 35’s, & the mopar lift.
I just regeared to 4.88 and live it! With the manual it was a total dog on the highway and off road. It’s much better now! Around 2500rpm going 75 on the freeway, need to down shift and go up to 2800-3000rpm on steep hills still. It’s much better off road too. I might have gone 5.13 for a possible 37” future tire but think I’ll be fine.
if you’re gong to go 35 eventually I think 4.88 would be fine for you now. It really depends on how you use your Jeep. :)

Definitely regear, it makes the 6-speed much more enjoyable. I just got 35’s installed today and will take a 250 mile trip tomorrow (July 8th) for work. I’ll report back on the highway experience with 35’s and 4.56 gears. With the 33’s I had it was a great set up on road and off.

Yes please let me know! Even my wife is complaining about the gearing. Good for me though that she’ll green light swapping it out, just need to make sure I buy the right gearing knowing I’m on 33’s now and plan on 35s
