Hi All,

I've been reading through posts and playing around with gearing calculators, but wanted to see what your thoughts are regarding gear ratios and daily drivability on a stock 6 speed JL 2 door. I test drove the 3.45 and thought it was geared too tall. I'm thinking a stock Rubicon with 4.10's is probably the sweet spot for daily driving, but I am also looking at the relatively cheap option of adding 4.88's on an order. I'm going to speculate that the 4.88's are too short for stock setups, but I'd love to hear what you all think!

I have the 4.10 and 6th gear is still too tall. I would go 4.88 if I had the option (I didn't). Especially if you ever plan on adding heavy accessories or larger tires.

What are your goals? 35's in a month? Never bigger than 33s?
What kind of wheeling?

I anticipate sticking with 33's to be completely frank. Nothing more than just fire roads and other tame stuff.

You're in a weird place. 4.88's on a 2 door for 33s is pretty overgeared.
At 80mph you are into the second stage of the oil pump, or right on the edge of it.

If you were going to immediately bolt 35s on, go 4.88s.

If you're going to leave it mostly stock, I'd do 4.10s and know you may have to downshift going up hill into the wind sometimes.

I'm assuming ordering from the dealer and 4.56 isn't an option.

I would say 4.88s are a little much for stock tires but not too much. 4.10s would be fine for stock tires.

But, famous last words are "I'm going to leave it stock". If you do get 4.88s you can step up to some slightly bigger tires in a while. Maybe some 285s that are about 34" advertised size or even 35s.

Hah, believe me that is in the back of my mind. I don't feel the need to upsize because I like the look of the 33's and stock wheels. Who knows what I'll think 2-3 years from now, but that's a long time to drive on a possibly over-geared vehicle.

Yeah agree that 4.88s and 33s will be too much gear for daily driver and highway use.

That will be around 2700 rpm at 75mph in 6th.

For context I'm around 2400rpm ay 75mph in 6th with 37inch tires

If I were getting rubicon with MT for sure I'd go 4.88
Most of the folks here optimize for highway driving, I optimize for crawling. With a stick, the lower the better.
Besides, I see 35's in your future.

That's a good point.

I built my JL for both daily driving and rock crawling, hence the 4.88s and 37s etc etc.

With the 5.13 1st gear, 4:1 t/c and 4.88 diff gear I can comfortable Crawl along around 1mph jabove idle

I'm happy with my 4.10's and 32"s. Didn't plan on upping tire size when I bought my '21 and I'm still running the stock size/happy with it.

If 35s were a plan, I agree. But 100:1 crawl vs 84:1 isn't much different in the real world. And 84:1 is plenty deep for 95% of what most of us do. 100:1 for fire roads is a little too deep.

We swapped to 4.10's to go with our full height 33's, and it's a good place to be. 3000-8000' altitude is our normal range. If we for sure had decided on 35's, I'd have swapped to 4.56.

On our 2 door, 6th gear on the freeway (80 mph) going up and down hills we don't need to downshift, just set the cruise and drive.

Biggest problem Jeep messed up a good thing. The clutch is junk. And the transmission the gears are are to wide so lots of shifting but I would do 4:10

Just a quick update - I did wind up ordering the 4.10's based on the above responses. Now the wait...
