392 D44 axles, where's the beef

My bad if this has been covered in a thread, I didn't find info on specific HD improvements. I'm wondering about the complete axle assembly, more than just axle shafts and ujoints. Has anything special been done to handle the HP and torque increase ?

The 392 uses the Gladiator Mojave front axles with the thicker tubes and cast iron knuckles. The rear axle has thicker axle tubes and modified suspension hard points.

Also removed FAD from the front axle on 392’s to improve strength

Would a set of takeoff 392 Axles working on my Sport? Might have a chance to get some but I want to be sure first.

Seem like the FAD housing in the passenger side axle tube is still a weak link for 37" and larger tires. Fortunately, I have pin pointed my JLR's use to 5 rated trails. IMHO, on my JLR bigger isn't better for daily drivering and middle rated trails. I'm now on 35's and liking them to date. OEM Rubicon axles work fine also IMHO.

I have been flip flopping between 35’s and 37’s. If I went either I would be going for the lightest ones I can find.
35’s maybe BFG KO2, General Grabber x3, Toyo Open Country at 3, all c rated tires, and for 37’s the only option I’m open to in the c rated bfg.

I can’t seem to find any Rubicon takeoff axles anywhere and I look daily. The set of 392’s I might get are stock but only have 80 miles on them. I’ll eventually regear no matter what I get. But like I said I haven’t seen any regular Rubicon axles in a 200 mile radius in months.

I’m always one to push the limits. Been running 37’s for a couple years on 8+ trails and stock gears. 38’s on 5.38 gears for the last couple months. Just ran gutbuster in the rain 2 weeks ago, which I’d argue is the hardest BOH trail in the program. Definitely judicious with the throttle, not going full bouncer style send but not afraid to get in to it when needed. Stock shafts, knuckles, and fad still holding up. The rubicon trail is less than 3 weeks away. Are stronger shaft, a truss for the fad, and stronger knuckles a good idea? Of course. Will I hide from tough trails until I drop in 60’s or 80’s? Hell no. I’ll be the 1st to post when I push it too far for the betterment of the community too.

FAD was removed since the 392 is full-time 4WD with no 2WD mode

They may have deleted the FAD motor, but it still shares the big window in the axle tube which is the FAD related weakness. Not only is it just a cover over the same commonly used axle, but it also has the unused threaded ears for the FAD skid.

Can you provide a source about the rear axle tube thickness? I’m not at all trying to be a jerk, but I’m on a ‘22 Sport and looking at building for 38’s. If I’m dropping cash in a rear Rubicon axle I’d do a 392 for the extra $60 if the tubes are thicker. Now that I say it out loud it seems dumb to not do the 392. Sources make me sleep better though!
Edit: Modified suspension points are also of interest!

The Bump stop pads on the rear axle are also raised 1”. I measured them between my old JL and the 392.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure I want to deal with the relocated control arm mounts. I have no idea how that would impact anything, so I'll shy away.
