Stuart what does mama say about.....
Florida Man Asks About Tire Set Up So Massive it Barely Requires Mods to his STOCK 392XR But Some Forum Members React Like He’s Building This:

Ha ha. Just messing with you guys. But seriously thoughts on this set up?

Yeah, I’m just messing around about both. The 38’s are going on Monday.
The massive width makes all the difference. The same tire in a 40x13.50r17 is 30lbs lighter. You could save 40+ lbs per tire by running a lighter tire like a KO2, KM3, or milestar in a 39-40" on top of saving another 20lbs per wheel. Our 38" Patagonias weighed 107lbs mounted. This tire alone weighs 121lbs and the wheels are another 43lbs. An extra 60lbs rotatating, unsprung weight is massive. I've seen mounted 40's that weigh less than that tire alone. Not sure that the fact they were 15.5" wide makes that much of a difference when you are talking about a 38" heavy mud tire on an 18x12 rim! Don't get me wrong as I'm not criticizing the OP, but have to chuckle just a little when somebody buys an $80k+ 392 XR and then spends at least $4k in completely non-practical tires and wheels but is worried about gas mileage. To be clear, I would love to be in a position to do this and don't blame the person for wanting to do this at all....but asking about gas mileage brings a smile to my face.....
Thank you. I just sent a message about getting some of those super wide fenders. ??I love this thread because it's all about experimentation and trying something new. (Despite my tastes being only for pizza cutters <10.5"). Keep us updated as you try different offsets. I'll be curious how well you can fit them under the fenders. As a last resort, there is an Icelandic company, formverk.is, that makes very high quality wider JL flares that they use in Iceland where they run the 40x16 tires and such: https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/fo...ty-yellow-wrangler-jl-club.89483/post-2158365
