While waiting on my 2019 order to arrive I have some time to gather items.

Going with General Grabber X3 (have a connection) and was all set to go 35x12.50R17 but then I noticed the 37x12.50R17 is only 1lb heavier (78.7 vs 79.7) and is a D rated tire.

Almost seems like that’s the better option but does the diameter have a more significant impact on performance (just braking and mpg I’m not drag racing lol) than the unsprung weight?

TIA

The taller tire will have a negative impact on braking distance, fuel economy, acceleration, and cause more wear and tear on parts.

That being said, go with whichever you prefer, just be prepared to charge parts a bit quicker/make mods as needed.

Roger that I was just trying to gauge how significant the impact is when going from 35 to 37 when the weight stays basically unchanged.

I think the acceleration and braking is what you will notice the most. If you bought a Rubicon it will be less noticeable than if you bought a sport due to the deeper gears and brakes.

You'll need a lift for the 37s, as well. You'll be killing your mileage on multiple fronts. I stuck with 35s and am very glad I did.

I hear you. My brain is saying 35s and the TeraFlex 1.5” lift but my circle of friends running F350s on 8” lifts and 40s makes me want 37s. No practical reason at all. I can admit that.

I totally get it, I went through the same phase. Though, no friends in F350s on 8" lifts and 40s, haha - I wouldn't be one bit swayed by that. I went and looked at a lot of JLURs on 35s and 37s to help me make my decision, and there hasn't been a single day since I went with the 315s than I regret it. That's me, though, some others might regret it every day. Good luck with your choice!

But how do I fit a power stroke diesel in a JL?
They will be too jealous of the 42s to notice the engine difference. If one does bring it up, start talking about how 40s look so small now that you have 42s. Conversation will end lol.

Personally, I'd be skeptical that a tire 2" taller with significantly more rubber, nylon, and steel inside it only weighs 1 lb. more. Either the listing is erroneous, or the 37" isn't nearly as big as it should be.

Also, the General is one of the heaviest tires on the market. Are you sure your connection is worth the weight penalty you're going to take with those tires? I'm just brainstorming out loud.

Yeah I thought the same thing. Shows the 35 is 35 and the 37 is 36.8. Adding to the intrigue is that General shows the 37x13.50R20 at 72lbs so 10% lighter than the 17” 37.

I get there’s less sidewalk between those two but riddle me this, the 35x12.50R20 is shown at 80lbs. Did they have that many misprints on their spec sheet?

Seems like the Generals are heavy for 35s but middle of the road for 37s.

Hell I don’t know what to do, oversized tires are purely for looks for what we actually do. I drive like a grandpa in Jacksonville basically taking my kids to school and running to the gym. I work from home and we have a economical family car. Rarely get over 55 and we want the Jeep for trail riding on weekends to looks for birds and animals plus going to the beach.

Probably get 35s and run them for a year or two and can always bump up.

I got 35's.. got a good deal on them locally already mounted. Have not done my suspension yet.. first time out with the 35's driving the route I always drive with my son someone had dug out a low spot and I ended up sitting on the frame... eventually got out but man I was regretting not holding out for 37's and a 2.5" lift... so look for a set of stock 33's and a set of lightly used 35's to come up for sale soon haha

Also on the weights, are you comparing tires of the same load rating? That could possibly account for a weight difference i.e smaller tire but higher load rating. Maybe not, but I know many companies out there offer the same size in multiple load ratings

Ha thanks for the real world experience.

I reached out to General and in fact their spec sheet was full of mistakes.

If anyone cares...

35x12.50R17 is 78lbs
37x12.50R17 is 82lbs
35x12.50R20 is 81lbs
37x13.50R20 is 88lbs

They thanked me for catching this but I'm not sure it was sincere. ;)
