For $550, the mopar kit doesn't strengthen the hinges and that's alot of $ to not address the hinges. I see that most people running 37s and larger are buying aftermarket bumper/tire carrier combo or something like the Ace/Rugged Ridge actual hinge upgrade kit rated for 40" tires for about the same price as the mopar kit.

As a data point, I've been running a 315/70/17 ko2 with aftermarket wheel(92 lbs total) for almost a year on the stock carrier and have bounced the jeep around offroad and it's held up fine.
The hinges are just fine with an aftermarket tire/wheel combo. I’m with you, I won’t spend that much on something that the RC plate will do. I wasn’t going to run anything with mine, but I figured for $60 why not.

Looks good painted. The effectiveness of the mopar kit seems to depend on where the tailgate weakness lies. Looking at the design(I'm not an engineer), it looks like it beefs up the strength of the 2 lateral plates/beams going from the hinges to the tire carrier and doesn't address the hinges directly. In theory, it could/should strengthen the back wall of the tailgate and more evenly distribute the load on both hinges allowing the hinges to hold a little more weight. This assumes the weight isn't distributed evenly in stock form and the stock hinges aren't the critical components like they have been with previous models.
I am sure that the engineers at Jeep know exactly where the weakness of the tailgate is and apparently it isn’t the hinges. Keep in mind that the rear tailgate has a max capacity of 85 lbs and the factory tire is around 55 - 65lbs so when you upgrade to a 37” tire like I have (which is around 100lbs.), you are only over the stock carrier capacity by 15lbs. You don’t need to reinforce the hinges for such a small incremental increase over the capacity. If you’re running some crazy tires like 40’s, then that’s an entirely different scenario.

Are you talking about the same jeep engineering group that designed the JL's subpar electric steering box, located the diff drain plug at the low point of the diff or allowed the hardtop gutter to pour water into the jeep? I could give additional examples...point being, jeep's engineering decisions aren't always sound.

All we need is someone with CAD/FEA to get a value on the strength of the hinges. Other than jeep engineers already having this information I’m sure many aftermarket companies designing carriers have similar information.

I agree that they know a strength number. They couldn’t design a new tailgate and design it the way it is without reasoning. And the capacity of 85lbs. doesn’t come out of nowhere, that’s calculated. Also designed with a factor of safety so technically, while not recommended, you can exceed the 85lbs. weight at your own discretion.

how's the ride compared to stock with your setup? I was even going with those tires too.

Saltynook:

I actually went to the 38. 15.5 20 Nitto Ridge Grappler. From 35 and 37 lol my 3rd set(I have 37 for sale).

the ride is fine I can cruise at 75-80 not much noise just regular jeep noise. Handling is fine. It’s not my daily driver. I do take it to vermont on weekends so lot of highway driving and it fine really fun to drive. It’s not as smooth and quiet as my 2019 Lincoln Navigator. I do find myself driving the Jeep more often just. its fun and looks cool!
