The problem with the 5.13 or 5.38 in a D44 is the Ring gear. there isnt enough room to the teeth become thinner. typically you will shear off the teeth of the ring gear if you had a d60 or d70 then 5 range gears would be just fine. i dont seen the need for anything more than 4.88 with 35" tires. jeep doesnt recommend 4.88 with with 35's and the auto. they do recommend 4.88 and 35's with the 6peed manual though

For all those talking about weak ring and pinions when using 5.13 or 5.38 gears, where are all the posts about broken ring and pinions?

Yeah, I didn’t see any posts on broken R&P’s either.

And you won't, because the R&P is not the weak link. In addition, the 5.38 is "strong enough" and every gear higher than that is only that much stronger.

I do most of my driving at 3,500-6,500’ elevation and am getting 5.13’s installed soon. Also plan to tow a trailer that should come in around 1,800 lbs and about that same height as the Jeep.
Anybody run this combo and if so, how do you like it?
I started off with 4.88 and 35's and it was really peppy even at altitude. I upgraded to 37's and a sea level it was still ok, but at altitude, it struggled--dragged out gears far longer than it should.

I recently re-geared to 5.13 and my pep returned as well as proper shifting. This was with a 3.6L/ZF8. If you have a 2.0T, I would say that 4.88 and 35's would be a good match.

Thanks for that input.
I have the 3.6 and 37’s are at the back of my mind in the event I feel it’s revving too high. I live at around 3,500’ and most of my driving only goes up from there.

I don't think you'll find it is revving too high. There is only 200 or so RPMs difference between any of the setups I have had. With 5.13 and 35's, I am guessing at 70-75 you would be at 2600-2700 RPMs.

I’m running 35s and 4.88s: the Jeep drives well; the automatic shifts perfectly. The Jeep feels peppy, if a little twitchy right off the line.

The V6 cruises at 2,500 RPMs at 75 MPH. I wouldn’t want any more than that. I have no plans to go bigger than 35s.

I’m averaging 15 MPG on crappy west coast gasoline blend.

With 5.13 gears you really aren’t spinning the motor up at all. 35’s run 2521 at 80mph and 37’s run 2385 at 80mph.

I’ve always been of the opinion that you should use as much gear as you can so that you have the best power for the full range of the vehicle. I personally can’t stand having a vehicle that is geared so low that the vehicle always wants to hunt in and out of the overdrive. Even with stock tires and 4.10’s I feel that the gearing is too low.

Geared too high? Lower numerical = higher gear ratio (less torque).

Agree with you--4.10 and stock 33's were too high with the 3.6L.

With a 3.6L/ZF8, this is how I would gear it for best and most usable power range:

33" tires = 4.56
35" tires = 4.88
37" tires = 5.13
39"+ tires = 5.38
