I’ve been much happier running 3PMS rated tires. Out here, by the time a road is seriously muddy, you just need to not go. Gumbo/clay mud impossible and dangerous to drive in. Chains are a serious PITA and make a marginal difference.

Chains will take you in 1 WD where front/rear lockers without chains won't come close. 1 WD meaning 2Hi, open diff. You can't compare them. You can actually wheel in deep snow with chains, up hill, obstacles.

If you started using chains for deep snow recovery 50 years ago like I did, they're not a PITA. If you get a set, practice putting them on tight. Drive a few hundred yards slowly and retighten. On the ranch they stayed on all winter. Chains aren't for everyone. A good pizza cutter studded snow tire has 10 x the traction of most AT's.

If a good studded snow tire gets you where you need to go, that's all you need and in comparison, chains are a PITA.

Chains do suck. Better ways to tackle the task. And I’m not just talking about tire chains.

Don't get K02s. They are 3PMS rated, but are crap on ice.
