That's still a great price, especially after rebate.

Yes, you figure you pay $24.97 and they mail you a $10.00 rebate check. End result is 5 qts for $14.97. They are good about sending the checks out too.

So, $14.97 and a $6.39 Mopar Oil filter. Total expense for oil change = $21.36

Ohh here in Panama City beach Florida it’s 17.00. Sucks it not everywhere! With the $10 rebate it’s $7 that’s crazy.

How do they make any money?
First of all, the majority of people that make the purchase with the intention of submitting a rebate never do. Secondly, once the rebates are submitted, a large portion (something like 40%-60%) of rebates are denied for either incorrect submissions for various reasons or incorrect denials by the claim processing company with a majority of submitted not fighting that situation.

Ok, I've been waiting for this! Attached is my used oil analysis from Blackstone labs. The oil is the factory fill, which had 2007 miles on it. Keep in mind, when you compare to universal averages, this is a brand new engine and some elements present are high because of break-in and the presence of other materials from assembly and gaskets.

Anyway, it won't mean a great deal, other than showing a normal, healthy new engine, until I do more UOA's and trends can start coming to light. The next oil change will be after 4,000 miles, as recommended by Blackstone. The oil in there now is Mobil 1 EP 0w20.

I'll probably have an analysis done for each of the next three oil changes, or so, unless I go broke. Anyway, enjoy!

My dealer told me that 5000 miles is recommended for the new JL under normal driving but if in a dusty area or off roading then 4000 is it. I have a warranty for life from my dealer and they do all the maintenance so I tend to go with their recommendations

I do my first change at 1000 and then follow up at 5000. The rest are done at 5000 intervals with a tire rotation included. 0-20 or 5-20 make no difference Tom, I will use what I can find and what is on sale

A 5w20 won't hurt anything. Once it warms up, it will have about the same viscosity as a 0w20. In fact, a thick 20 weight will be very close to a thin 30 weight. On the oil weight, though, I'll be sticking with 0w20 unless I see it shear down even thinner in a used oil analysis. I would be shocked to see that with Mobil 1 in a Pentastar, but it can happen with some oils in some engines. Ford specifies 5w30 in the 3.5 Ecoboost because that engine is hard on oil and will shear most conventional and even some synthetic blends right down to a 20 weight. This is one of the things a used oil analysis will tell you.

When I get 4,000 miles on my current oil, I'll change it and do another UOA and will post the results. We'll then compare the viscosity with what it was when new, and see what happens. I fully expect it to remain a 20 weight in the 3.6, especially since it is Mobil 1 EP.
So Mobil 1 would be a good oil to run in this motor even though mopar does not recommend it? Thanks

That's up to you. I'm running it, but if you don't feel comfortable not having the Chrysler certification, then run an oil that does, like Pennzoil Platinum or Valvoline. (Both outstanding oils.)

I'm extending past 4,000, btw. I'm at 4500 now and will go to at least 5,000 miles before changing. I bought a bottle of Mobil 1 0w20 Annual Protection for the next change. It was 40 bucks (ouch!) but I'll leave it in there until the beginning of October. I'm going to Moab then and want fresh oil for the trip.

Yep, very anxious to see what the 0W20 looks like after 7,000+ miles of use, which is where most of us will be if we follow the oil change reminder on the dash. Since the Pentastar doesn't have DI, turbos, etc. I expect that it won't be as hard on oil, but that 0W20 viscosity is still really thin and the engine bay is still pretty cramped and hot, so it'll be neat to see how this oil holds up.

After warranty period is finished, I'm definitely going with a better viscosity for summer heat. FCA cares about fuel economy and government regulations. As the owner, I care about keeping my engine alive long term. We have different interests. I've already seen a video of a PUG engine with cam bearing failure at low mileage.
