What would if you install a bigger starting battery and just hooked up the positive and negative leads from the aux battery to the starting battery. This way you will have just one battery installed. I know you could run down the starting battery but if it large enough it could handle the load when the motor is off.

Had to cancel my appointment and just had it back in last week. They had it for 3 days. This time said the main battery was bad! I knew it was probably bad when I left after they replaced the Aux. Battery but they said it was good.

When I went to pick it up, I checked to see if the ESS Display was still saying battery charging start stop wonā€™t work and it was. I went inside and two techs told me that is normal and that the computer needs torelearn the battery charge cycle. Is this True?

Itā€™s been two days. Not much driving done. Just took it out for 10 mins and it still saying charging start stop wonā€™t work.

Iā€™m assuming there is something else wrong like the relay, or Control Module? Can I just fix this myself?Really sick of this crap and the dealership!!!!!

It could be normal, whether it needs relearned or just needs charged. If you're not driving much it won't have a chance to learn or charge. Put a battery charger on it and see if it helps.

Thanks Jebiruph! I read someone stating that it only took them 20 mins of driving to get the Battery Charging Warning to go away.

I havenā€™t driven that much so will give it some more time. I donā€™t have a car battery charger.

You were Right Brother!!! Itā€™s all good now!!!

Have to apologize for being angry with the dealer as they were right too and should be given credit for fixing it!

Thank You!!!

So what happened to get it working? And being a dealer means never having to be apologized to.

Not Sure! I took the Jeep out, the Warning was still up saying charging. I came to my first stop and the engine turned off. From then on it was working.

I did notice the charge rate was initially at 14.6 when I left the dealer. Then it went to 14.3 and stayed there for a few days. Today it was at 14.2 14.1 and thatā€™s when it started working so Iā€™m thinking the battery wasnā€™t fully charged. Actually probably still isnā€™t as I think that charge rate should drop down in the 13ā€™s but again I event driven that much.

Maybe it was the learning phase.

Thanks again!

Following your question, I want know if i can get rid of the aux battery and connect +&- to main battery?

The whole battery thing is mind blowing, I had my main battery replaced after 6 months as it was bad and all seemed to work well but the other day the EVIC read 14.1 so I metered the main and ESS battery and both read 12.6 so out of curiosity I connected my battery tender and after 10 mins it went into float mode and according to the maker of the tender the battery is either fully charged or defective but the charge indicated it was 100% so the next thing I did was pulled the main and ESS negatives and waited 10 mins and reconnected and it still said 14.1 but on the next start it dropped to 12.7 on the display and this morning itā€™s back to 13.5

I know the JL uses a charging algorithm and only allows the alternator to put out what is needed as thatā€™s what was explained to me by a FCA tech but to honest who knows.

I have ESS disabled with my SSS module and never really think about looking at the voltage as everything works even ESS when I select it to being on and I have an extended warranty so not gonna worry to awful much about as I have my ESS jumper so if the ESS battery craps out I can jumper it out and roll down the road

@Jebiruph has done a ton of research on the whole battery charging system and I have kept up with all of it but itā€™s still confusing to understand the charging algorithm so itā€™s best not to worry to much about it until a problem pops up

I'm confused too. For 9 months, my voltage was consistently around 14.5, except after extended driving when it fluctuate as designed. Then after a day or two it would return to the high voltage and over time that creeped up to 14.8. Today after reading your post, I checked for the first time in several weeks and it was 13.5 as it should be.

I think what happens is that normally the alternator voltage is monitored by, then adjusted by the Powertrain Control Module as needed, as long as there is a clean bill of health from the IBS. If data from the IBS indicates any possible issue, the PCM cranks up the alternator output until the IBS is happy. I think most of the time my IBS is not happy.

You can, but I wouldn't get rid of it. Once it's charged, disconnect it and leave it there for a backup.
It's dicussed here https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/3-6l-ess-dual-battery-consolidated-information.25377/ and here https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/3-6l-ess-aux-battery-bypass.17293/
The problem i have is in Australia which has the right hand drive jlus the aux battery is going to be in the way of the resevoir on the 3.3 falcon shocks which i have ordered, Which i frustrating , so i either move the aux battery or get rid of it. If your solution works i will just remove it to start with .Thanks Danny
