2021 JLUR 35,000 miles. Motor-generator unit seems to be making clacking noise on engine restart. Sounds a bit like an a/c clutch engaging.
Vehicle is still under 8 year emission warranty but wanted to try and determine if the noise is a covered part (let dealer fix) or something else (I’ll diagnose and fix myself). TIA!

There's a TSB to update the MGU for excessive noise. If it remains then we're supposed to replace it. It's covered under the 8yr/80k hybrid warranty

Do you have a TSB number for that? Thanks.

I went looking for it but didn't have much success. I think the TSB got superseded by the Y40 recall, as it updates the HCP as part of the recall. I definitely remember reading one that directly talks about MGU noise, though. Have your dealership verify the HCP is up to date. (The MGU is considered the HCP (Hybrid control processor) on topology)

On a side note, it seems they just came out with a new TSB to replace a gear clutch on the 8 speeds. We've been told for years we're not supposed to rebuild these units and now they're telling us to rip them open. Neat.

I read that transmission clutch TSB and it concerned me a bit. Lots of “pry right here or you’ll damage things” comments! I guess the noise I’m hearing could be from the tranny but it more sounds like it’s from the front of the engine. Will get someone to operate while I listen from outside.

Another odd behavior is under hard acceleration, letting off the skinny pedal doesn’t immediately reduce engine rpm’s. I.e. it revs to 4,500 and stays there for almost 5 seconds with no upshift, then drops down. Didn’t do that for first few years then started about a year ago. One dealer said it’s normal.😖

I know it’s difficult sometimes to get a video that records the sound accurately. But if it’s not too big of an ask maybe post a video or just audio of what you’re hearing. I would like to know what I should be listening for If this starts happening.
