Just starting my build will be doing 3.5” lift and 35’s and then in a few years I’ll be doing a pro rock 44 up front and 37’s. I’m thinking 5.13 so I don’t have to re gear in a few years after the axle swap in the front I found lots of info on the auto but not much on the manual.

thanks for any and all help!

picture is just me taking a weekend stroll here in Oahu.

I would choose at least 5.13 gear. Since your are coupled (manual) with the engine. The 3.6L needs to be above 2300rpm for 200 lbs-ft of torque. I would even consider 5.38 gears, due to the 2nd overdrive gear. This engine loves the higher rpms.....you just need to let her buck. You will have the power needed at higher altitudes and you actually get better MPG, due to the fact your not loading your engine down in the lower rpm.

I have 5.38 on one ton axles in my JLU.....However, I run 40's.......But, so many 40" tires do'nt even measure 40 inches. Including the set I have on it now.....barely over 39".

I’m a short shifter, and I have 5.13’s on 39” KM3’s. It’s on the edge of being too deep. If I were on 37’s I’d go 4.88. By short shifter I mean outside 1st gear I rarely see 3k RPM. I cruise under 2k once up to speed and just anticipate the need to downshift for hills or passing. Before I regeared, the stock 4.10’s were actually fine in 4L on the trail with my 39’s. So don’t feel like you will hate your jeep if you don’t go deep enough, I doubt you’d notice.
However, if you constantly keep your revs up for available torque/power at a moment’s notice, the 5.13’s might be for you.

I am just waiting for the auto folks to chime in with their recommendations/experiences.

Not throwing shade on them because I recognize that the auto is a great transmission and that most people have opted for the auto but I can't tell you how many gearing threads I have read that specifically ask about manuals and the auto folks bring up their gearing and experiences.

Manual drivers: "WE DON'T CARE HOW YOUR AUTO DRIVES WITH YOUR WHEEL/GEARING COMBINATION!"

Normally I would say 4.88 but being on Oahu sort of changes the advice a mainlander gives. Oahu has a 4,000 ft. peak and only two places you can hit 60 mph?

5.13 max

I like my 5.13s with 37s. I live in a hilly area so the little bit of extra gearing helps me personally. That and I plan to run bigger tires when my current tires are worn.

I've had both 4.88 and 5.13 on my JLU manual. I prefer 5.13. I even considered 5.38 but decided against it. I wheel it and have hills on the highway drives so it's been really a boost for me.

I have a MT JLUR and I'm currently running 37' on stock gear with no issues other than losing my 6th gear. When i do re-gear, I'm going with 5:13.

I run 37s and 5.13s. 1st and 4L with Rubi TC is hilariously short (I haven't experienced an Atlas 4speed yet) and is about as point and go as you can get in the rocks. It's amazing on descents.

Highway driving, I'm closer to 2500rpm at 70-75 in 6th. The Jeep seems to like it.

R&P gets too small in a D44 at 5.38 (or that's what the internet says, at least).

Currently running 315/70/17s (between a 34 and 35 inch tire) on 4.88s and think it's a great combination.

Do blue trails on regular basis and drive fully laden with family and gear on hilly passes no issue in 5th and 6th gear at speed.

One other key change I did however is install a CFII cluth kit. The heavier inertia flywheel literally makes it feel like an extra 50lbs of torque at idle.

I can take off on a steep incline laden down at 1200rpm no problem in 2hi and 1st.
