heck can't you just get an entire 3.6l Penta from a scrapyard for <$2k?
Lol, yeah, probably.
If you pull it yourself maybe. Last one we bought cost the shop 3500.
I feel like if I'm going to all the trouble of replacing the engine on my dime, I'm going to drop in a 5.7 Hemi. I know it's significantly more expensive, but if it would work with the Auto Trans, the Transfer Case and the D44 axles., I think that's the way to go. ...this all assumes it's not under warranty. A warranted engine,,they can replace that all day.

I don’t consider the 5.7 a good engine. To each their own.

Yep, and no matter how unlikely it isto happen, the design of the engine is such that the engine is not worth fixing by the time the lifters go down.

I feel better.. much better with the pentastar and what I thought was a superior trans.. the AISIN 6 speed..

I've owned dodge/ram trucks since the 80's so I'm familiar.

Quick Update. Dealer called this afternoon and said some lifters had collapsed, and the cam was torn up to the point there are shavings throughout the motor.

Dealer is recommending a a new engine be replaced under warranty. Awaiting approval from the warranty division, which should come on Tuesday or Wednesday.

At that time we should also have a timeline of delivery.

Yeah...I'm happy to give all the Deets, after everything is settled and done. Good idea to clam up until then.

I will keep this thread up to date on the replacement process.

Good on them. That’s the right way to do things.

Well, my rattle was definitely IN the motor. When the revs would hit about 2500, it was loud enough to hear in the cab on most occasions. I think it was lessened when using premium gas...maybe not.

It seemed to happen with the engine warmed up, and not when cold. Idk, maybe I read too much into it and it always happened every day.

Either way it's being worked on...
Tolerances change when metal heats or cools. Metal expands when heated. Oil viscosity thinning as it gets heated might have a influence also. A lot of the quick fix "snake-oil" products use very high viscosity oil to quiet down worn engine components.

I may have missed it in the thread - mileage on the motor?

I'm getting a bit confused with many people on here, including utube Wrangler reviewers like TFL, etc, reporting that the 3.6 Pentastar is rock solid unit, and very common to hear of owners observing 100k..200k...300000, without opening them up,,,,and then those who say rocker arms and lifters being a "very common failure".

You cannot have both scenarios, as they contradict one an other.

My question is not a loaded one. I'm sincerly getting confused now lol.

Which one is it?:movember:
Like anything else it's a luck of the draw. Statically I am not sure what "very common" is? The 3.6 has been known to have a few known issues. I think most have been addressed? I thought the lifter issue was a thing of the past? Hopefully OP's issue is not a wide spread issue.

I do think the majority of modern engines, any brand, with regular maintenance should get to 180K-200K miles pretty trouble free. I am talking about the long block not the peripherals. It's much more common for some thing like a water pump or something to go before that.

A friend has a few 3.6 equipped work vehicles. All have regular service. One had the rocker problem. Problem started at around 80K miles with misfires. The dealer replaced 2 rockers, the rollers were bad in the left head. That perticular year a 100K mile warranty was offered and the work was under warranty. That motor ran for 280K miles. It did consume a quart of oil every 800-1000 miles for the last 100K miles though. Another 3.6 failed at 160K from severe bearing wear and nothing to do with rocker or lifter issues. That engine over heated. I think sand casting residue was the cause? That engine used a quart of oil every 3K miles. The third one was able to run to about 130K miles trouble free before developing issues. It got to 240K miles but with main seal oil leaks.
