My wife and I took the Diesel Wrangler on the Pony Express Trail (PET) yesterday. Our route:
Salt Lake to Fairfield (49 miles, pavement)
Fairfield to Ibapah (120 miles of dirt, PET)
Ibapah to West Wendover (58 miles, pavement)
The trip took 9 hours, about 2 hours more than normal, because we stopped for pic opportunities and a lunch break.
Most of our PET speeds were 20 - 25 MPH in 4th and 5th gear. Our pavement speeds averaged 50 MPH from SLC down to Fairfield and 65 MPH from Ibapah up to Wendover. Our elevation ranged from 4,500 feet to 6,200 feet. I did not engage 4WD.
I filled up before the PET run and again at the end of it.. Surprisingly, the calculated MPG was 33, which my Fuel Gauge Readout confirmed. I usually get 30 MPG freeway and 25 MPG city.
I've had the Jeep 6 months and changed the oil last month at 5,000 miles. Other specs - the average temperature was 70 degrees F with no clouds. I accelerate slowly and use engine compression when braking. We had about 50 lbs of tools in the Jeep (anything can happen on the PET - and there're no services or cell phone towers out there).
Fortunately, the Montego Bay Casino in West Wendover was open and I treated Wifey to prime rib before heading East to SLC. The casino had about 10% of the usual customer load. And, there was little traffic on the Trail (we saw 3 other vehicles on the PET) and the traffic load back to SLC was light.
Questions or concerns? I'll check back in with you.
