2k mile oil change and filter cutaways (on Jeep Wrangler 392)

15 minutes oil change, 5 minutes changing the oil and 10 minutes cleaning up.. track bar, tie rod, steering stabilizer, and the bracket..oil bath..still better than the stupid Ford design.

I did replace it with the larger white SRT mo-041 filter, tight fit but able to hand tight it without using tools, awkward position tho.

Filter seems very good quality, heavy gauge metal housing, anti-drain back gasket, bypass valve, paper media held together tightly.

Huge amount of metal particles and gasket material, believe it or not, it’s actually a lot less than my 2018 3.6 and 2019 raptor 3.5’s oil filter around 2k miles. All from new engine break-in, normal, that’s the reason why I change it earlier.

Yea - this is why I also change oil more frequently than most, especially for the first 15k miles or so. That includes diffs. (I was astounded at how gnarly the diff fluid was at 3k miles.)

Indeed, lots of metal buildups on that magic drain plug for just couple thousand miles. Plan to swap the cover around 3k milk and change the fluid.

Did you have any information about the spring pressure on the anti drain back valve or by pass valve? If both filters have the same spring tension then the oil pressure should be the same correct? I like the idea of a bigger filter but am leery about over engineering the engineers.

They are the same engine and same oil filter same housing used across mopar line up, so that’s the filter for the 392 hemi.
I haven’t have the chance to open up the SRT filter yet. Just don’t want to wast a new one. They put a regular filter there because of fitment issues. The SRT filter is way tooooo big for that location. A thin wall low profile 93mm/15 filter wrength won’t even fit. I had to grand the wrength lip down. Filter is almost touching the reinforcement beam… and getting a hand grip on that filter is PITA.

I use the SRT filter because it’s cheaper and faster on Amazon and just a fun experiment.

I change the oil on my new vehicles every 2500 miles until I hit 10K. So that’s 4 oil changes in 10,000 miles. I cut open every filter...you definitely do get chunks of metal at times. My 2021 Rubicon had a small chunk of aluminum in the first change. The filter has been clean after that.

Especially true when driven off road and slow with all that low gearing, the mileage of a JL is not equivalent to regular cars; I plan to change every 3000 miles, regardless of the percentage of off road driving.

Plus, even if I don't own it long enough to take advantage of that extra engine and drivetrain life, I get back the extra cost (and more) when I sell, if I do it myself and keep all my records.

Have you tried Castrol edge full syn? Our 07 Rubicon liked it better than mobile 1, royal purple or valvoline (full syn)
I remember when non syn pennzoil left the most sludge . What are you using currently?

This may be a perfect candidate for a remote filter relocation kit ?

Looks like you could use a Fumoto oil drain valve where you can attach a tube and direct the oil into your catch bucket prior to draining the oil…

The problem is the plug is already a clearance issue. Maybe somebody will come out with an aftermarket high clearance pan with a drain plug on the side.

He's better off not doing that. That drain plug alone is just aching to be hit and ruin that cast aluminum oil pan. The oil he mentioned getting on stuff isn't from draining the oil, it's from the oil filter removal since it holds quite a bit of oil. I would use a punch or something similar to put a small 1/4 inch hole in the bottom of the filter and use a funnel to direct that into a drain pan if needed. That's how the pros do canister oil filters on some semi trucks and other heavy equipment.

I still don’t have my Jeep, so I was uncertain of the location. And great idea for punching a hole in the filter! Will definitely be doing that on all my oil changes in the future. My Yukon isn’t so bad, but the sounds (and looks) of it, these JL’s make a mess!

Just so future readers are clear: the V6 uses a cartridge style filter that you access from on top. It makes no mess at all to change. It’s super.

From this thread it looks like the 392 uses a traditional screw-on filter that would indeed make a mess. I can’t speak to the 2.0 or diesel.
