I’m curious, what are you using for undercarriage touch up?

Disclaimer: I don't know anything and am never a good source for proper maintenance advice. That said, to answer your question, I just went into AutoZone and bought a cheap black rattle can and a cheap black touchup pen - I use the rattle can where the damage is not near any bolts or moving parts and I'm therefore not too concerned with accuracy, and use the touchup pen where it's in an area I don't want to splash paint around. Others in this forum are much more precise and diligent, I have no doubt.

Hahaha, yep. But that sh!t will rust fast under there. At least it has on mine; hence the sanding before painting.

No kidding, ha! Same thing here in SoCal, but I do intend to winter wheel in states that heavily salt and we all know how that goes…

admittedly i hit the sliders and bumpers with a file and steel brush to de-bur, then hit with a black rattle-can as well (still need to do my JL after my last outing a couple weeks ago actually, been putting it off). I use the auto specific one from Ace. The skids underneath, I let them go.

Have you looked underneath? I was really surprised: Yeah, I live in Colorado. But I picked mine up in early August brand new. No snow, hence no road salt or anything. I wheeled it a bunch--mostly in the desert, and then I looked underneath in early October (hadn't been any snow or anything), and all the undercarriage places I had scraped and gouged, were rusting. I did NOT expect to find that. So I washed and sanded and washed, and then painted. And now I will paint immediately every time I scrape something, whether summer or winter. I wonder if you might be surprised to find your undercarriage scrapes are rusting, Arizona or not.

I took mine directly from picking it up in Michigan to Missouri, where I scratched the crap out of it. Got that out of the way so I could just enjoy it.

This right here. My ‘01 XJ still looked really dang good up until the day I sold it, despite beating it up. I tried to maintain it well and it must’ve worked because it held up. I’m a firm believer that if you take care of your stuff it’ll last a long, long time. Trying to instill that in my son as well. Sure, it takes extra work and time but I also get a sense of satisfaction from fixing and maintaining things.

I have the Asfir aluminum oil pan skid, but I am keeping the factory steel skids everywhere else, and yeah, those rust fast. As does the bottom of the steering stabilizer that I dinged, the bottoms of the differential housings, the crossmembers, so on and so forth...

I think I'm the current record holder. I came to an agreement with dealer on price and options on Nov 3 2021, and took delivery on Aug 30 2022, for 9 months and 27 days.

A couple October orders that took delivery in July came close to the same.
