I have a 2022 Wrangler Sport S, 2dr, 4cyl turbo with a soft top. I’m looking to sell and buy a new Sahara 4dr V-6 and the soft top is a must. When I was looking at the dealership, the 2024 model has the twill tops, and then they go back to canvas in 2025. When I asked the salesman about this, he stated it’s because the twill is more expensive and they were trying to cut costs. He also had no idea how to put the top on so I really don’t know that he has any idea what the hell he’s talking about. Everything I’m reading does say that the 12 is more expensive and more luxury, it reduces road noise as well, but I find it hard to believe that Jeep would use it one year and then go right back to what they were using before if there were no issues and it was just the cost. Anyone have a 2024 soft top and care to chime in on this, pros and cons.

I'm not sure about this specific problem, but I can tell you the manufacturer of these tops (Bestop) make both twill and and cheaper material. Also, Stellantis has made several cost cutting measures over the years. 2024 was a mid-cycle refresh to "excite" customers. I wouldn't put this past them.

[Edit] The premium soft top was the standard fitment for the 2024 model year.

For future reference:
The premium soft top is a deep black acrylic fabric that is the same color on the underside.

The standard soft top is referred to as Sailcloth, and is a light gray on the underside. The exterior side has a vinyl-like appearance.

To the best of our knowledge, the premium soft top became the standard fitment as of the 2024 model year. No matter the model year, it's likely that the Sahara, which is an upmarket trim, would have the premium top as the default from the factory.

The (NLA?) standard soft top is referred to as Sailcloth, and is a light gray on the underside. The exterior side has a vinyl-like appearance.
In 2025 they went right back to the vinyl like, that came standard on my 22. It’s not just the 24 Sahara, it’s all of them that I’ve seen. Yes, they are the darker black and more cloth feeling tops. This is why I’m wondering. I know cost is something they try to keep down, but it just seems strange that they would do this for 1 year, not have any major issues and then go right back to the original material they’ve been using for the past at least 4 years.

I just checked the Build a Wrangler webpage. The "Premium Black Sunrider Soft Top" has indeed returned, as a $495 option, on several 2025 model year Wrangler trims. It would appear that the salesman that you doubted is in fact correct on that particular matter. 👍

FWIW, Stellantis has pivoted a number of times on available options, particularly paint choices, between model years and sometimes during the course of a single model year. The dealer's proprietary Order Entry System will be the controlling authority on what is available at a particular point in time.

Be wary, it's not only the top, Stellantis changes up standard equipment from year to year, something standard one year, can be an expensive option the next year.

Ensure that the vehicle has the important options you would like.

Yep. For example, the 2024 Willy's trim came standard with the tow package, but whether or not that tow package included the aux switches depended on the build date. ASKMEHOWIKNOW.

To cut costs? Maybe their cost and they are charging the old premium top price now for the vinyl top. I've got a lowly Sport S model and I don't think my premium top was but a few hundred more than the vinyl.

Yeah way overpriced. Might as well get SOT. Cheaper and better integrated.
SOT looks ugly naked and you can never remove the rear window. Super convenient for convertible mode though. Etop is expensive but they have no direct competition.

The premium soft top is well worth the money. It's a shame they went back to up charging for it. I personally wouldn't consider a "standard" soft top.
