I thought the Rubicon and 392 platform were essentially the same - but it sounds like aftermarket parts/mods that are readily available for the Rubicon aren't necessarily going to work with the 392?
The windshield cowling is different so light mounts made for regular Jeep JL cowlings don’t fit. The 392 uses the Gladiator Mojave hood that is about an inch taller. There are options available though. There are a few under hood mods that don’t work with the 392 due to lack of room from shoehorning the V8 in there. Mostly on board air compressor mounts. They still fit under the seats though. I put mine in the rear behind the rear seats. Suspension lifts (spring rates) are different due to the weight of the V8 but the 392 comes lifted from the factory over the regular Rubicon. Skid plates are different but multiple companies accommodate the 392.

Wheels are the same bolt pattern, roll cage is the same, rock sliders are the same, tailgate is the same, bumpers are the same, doors are the same, roof/hard top are the same. There are very few differences.
I even added a 2 inch receiver made to fit the JK to my 392 because it has a shorter tube than the factory option, it has less impact on the departure angle.
im referring to the 21-23 392 there may be something I’m missing on the 24s

The metal bumper is not standard on the Rubicon. You also can't get leather seats or power seats. You need to upgrade to the X for those.
so, there is a steel bumper (without winch) stock on the X - but the only way to get the steel bumper on the Rubicon is with the winch option? At least that’s the way it seems in the builder…

There also seems to be some sort of Mopar leather option on the Rubicon that would give you leather seats - are those different than the stock leather seats in the X?

thanks!

this is definitely me! lol

If I were to add sand/dunes/desert type running to Moab (and actually lean more toward the desert/sand stuff), what do you figure would be the best platform for the desert with a decent amount of crawling mixed in?

the v8 clips sure look fun in the desert!!
You are right, Sand and Mud require a lot of torque. And if you go to Glamis and play in those dunes you need high speed and low drag.

Moab screams for 4:88 gears and a 37 tire. Mud dines on TALL tires and is the home of 40's up and gears that provide a lot of wheel spin. Sand needs tires that float across the dunes and can deliver high speed.

In other words it's hard to build for all 3 surfaces and you need to look at where you would spend most of your time. and go in that direction.

I was told I could not get leather seats. It only came with cloth.

I was not looking at the metal bumpers since I won't be needing a winch. I believe you can order it with & without, but it is an upcharge.

Let me put it this way ... fewer things fit the 392 than the 2.0 and V6 models (but not as bad as the 4xe I think).

For example, I just installed a twin compressor in the wheel well. Not an option for the 392 since the engine bay is full and the whole underside seems to be exhaust.

why does it always seem like life has tradeoffs :)

What would your from scratch build recommendation be for a dune and sand runner, Don?

I have played on the dunes a few times but never playing hard care like the Jumper do and things that.

Its a sand base and shifting sands are ever present, meaning you can find yourself hub deep if not properly built.

Tires:
KEY to ALL things off road are you vehicles SHOES! That said I have friends that are serious in the Sand and they all travel with a set of Sand tires and take them off when they leave.

But you are prob looking for a one tire fits all: For that I suggest the Goodyear Duratrac, I have run it thru sand, mud and rocks and found it to be an excellent performer in all areas on a moderate scale, Clearly not beyond 6+ on a scale of 1 - 10.

Other tires to consider at or below 6+. In no order:

Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT

BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2*

Toyo Open Country R/T

Falken Wildpeak AT3W*

* These are found on OEM Jeeps and Gladiators

Size: I see more often 35 x 12:50 & 13:50 x 17.

NOTE: I stronger suggest you invest in wheels that are wider than the OEM Jeep wheels which are 7 / 7.5. My wheels are either 8.5 or 9 inches. Wide tires demand wide rims, just that simple, just like a wide foot demands a wide shoe.

Lift. If you go TRUE 35s I would stay OEM unless you are rubbing and if then a 1.5-2 in lift. You not in the rocks but on a flat surface so stay LOW and stay upright...remember the rule: For every inch you lift, you need to go OUT 1.5 inches per side to maintain the CoG.

Shocks: I run and have run for 20 years Rancho RS 9000 Adjustable shocks. I know many who do in the sand. The Serious guys go with a shock that has an external reservoir to keep the fluid cool. Jumping and sand can generate a lot of heat. Otherwise the reservoir shocks are nothing but eye candy, they were developed for racing like the Baja series or the 25 hrs of LeMans etc, extreme suspension action over and extreme amount of time.

Other adds: If your are serious then I would at some point invest in a HD Anti Sway bar, like the Hellwig BIG WIG. This brings a LOT of stability to the table. See pic, not my Jeep but my truck OEM vs Big Wig. This helps in keeping your lateral stablity. Jumps do not guarantee you land equally on all 4 wheel and that what swayers do maintain a lateral stance.

If came to me and said want to play in the sand this would be our discussion...

fantastic info for me - would the v8 be welcome because of the higher torque available at lower RPMs? Or even the 2.0 turbo if not the v8?

Or is it all about the shoes and suspension - you are right that I still need to be able to ride this comfortably on the road, so can’t just go all in on a dedicated runner.

The V6 is a screamer topping out at 6000 rpm and so its Torque band is lower in the curve. I have driven the 2.0 T and yes very torquey, but it rpm band is far higher. hard to call on V6 or 2.0T. I think either one is a good choice...

If money is not a factor and you want a Rubicon, go with the X package. It is well worth the upgrade in my opinion. My new 24 is a stunning vehicle, both in comfort and capability. I'm completely blown away by it after the first couple weeks. Makes my '12 JK feel 100 years old.

Personally, while the 392 is an amazing vehicle, I'm not sure I would choose it over the 4xe. I prefer the electric driving capability and better environmental footprint. But those are personal preferences. You can't go wrong with a 392. They're my two favorite options.
