I have a Willys XR edition with the LSD and want to replace it with a rear locker but a local shop is recommending the truetrac? I occasionally offroad at places like Windrock and Uwharrie and have always had rear lockers on Toyota's in the past. This is my first JL and looking for some pro's and cons of each.

A True Trac will work really well, but it'll always be a limited slip and never a locker. If you need a locker, then you need a locker. If you don't need a locker, the True Trac is one of the best limited slips on this planet, and most others.

Why not keep the stock lsd and add a front locker for the same money or are you addressing both axles? A full locker will always outperform a lsd in my experience.

I did think about that option as well. I have had multiple vehicles with a rear locker but I have never had a front.

I've had at least two vehicles with True Tracs front and rear. Loved them. Awesome on snow and mild to moderate off roading, invisible on pavement. I too have a 23 Willys XR, and putting two of those on are on my list. I'll do the front first.

When i was growing up my step dad had atrue trac in the front and a detroit in the rear. Was a great setup till we started to get into harder stuff then the front became the issue . If you are planning to wheel it lock it , do it right the first time. (My opinion)

It all depends on where and how you're going to wheel it.

I have a Rubicon and I take serious trails in Moab. The lockers are needed for that.

I had an XJ on 32s with TrueTracs front and rear. It was great for Moab as well. I just skipped the really hard lines and didn't hit the 8+ rated trails.

Lockers are great if you need them (most people don't need them as much as they want to believe.) TrueTrac is good for the rest.

I was thinking of just spending once and being done. I may not need the locker but if I did it would be worth it. The price between the two doesn't seem too different.

Yeah, labor is a lot of the cost. Beyond running a wire to switch the locker, there's no difference in the labor for either.

And if you have any plan to change tire size, you may want to consider swapping out the axle gears at the same time. Doing gears at the same time as the locker/LSD means you only pay for that labor once.

I think I may change direction completely and get an ARB Air locker. They are running a 15% off sale on air compressors and lockers.

The only issue with a selectable locker is it is always "all or nothing". You're either running an open differential, or you're running what is essentially a spooled axle when locked.

With a TrueTrac, at least you've always got something all the time. And for the vast majority of the time for me, that "always something" was more than adequate.

Replaced the rear OE lsd in my Willys with a Nitro Helix (essentially a Truetrac), and added an ARB to the front. Works pretty well without the frt locker engaged, and when things get tough, the button on the dash makes all the difference.
The Torsen type diffs (Truetrac & Nitro Helix), work pretty well. ?

@ArmyRN has a good point. With the True Trac you'll just get through the obstacle, there won't be any figuring out what you need. You'll just be on the other side, or driving through. They also work really well in snow if you find yourself in that situation.
