I'm looking to upgrade my stock rubicon wheels and tires. How much offset does the stock wheel have? I was thinking about going with -12mm offset wheel but not exactly sure how much it will stick out. I would love for my wheels to have a little more offset than what comes factory but I don't want anything extreme or too much. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I personally love that look. I'm looking at 9" width wheels and -12mm offset. I guess those would barely stick out?

Here's a 17x9 wheel with -12mm offset and 4.53" of backspace, wrapped in 38x13.5's...

Nice ride! I'm still kind of new to all this stuff but I don't quite understand the 4.53" of backspace. The wheels I'm getting are -12mm offset but how do I get the backspace?

Thanks Michael!

You take a wheel without a tire and lay it face down. Put any straight edge across the middle of it and measure the space to the backside of the wheels mounting flange. That is backspace.

Check out some of the wheel and tire size calculators on tiresize.com for some interesting visual comparisons between what you have now and what you're wanting. There's also some good reading.

Your factory wheels are 17x7.5 with +44.45mm offset. And your tires are 285/70-17. Just plug in the 17x9 and -12mm that you mentioned to get both a visual overlay of both setups and all sorts of clearance and dimensional changes.

I looked at that and from what I'm seeing is that even with the +1mm offset option in my new wheel size that my tire will stick out 2.34" further than my factory setup. My old setup is 285/70/17 on the factory wheels. New would be 35/12.5/18 on 18x9 wheel. So what I'm seeing is if I go +1mm offset that it's 2.34" further out and with -12mm offset it's 2.85" further out. Please correct me if I'm wrong

Theyā€™ll still stick out. Roughly 3/4ā€ less than mine with your 9ā€ wide wheels and -12mm offset. I think it would look dope.

Those numbers sound on point to me. Pretty cool website, isn't it? Lots of good and interesting info.

Quick question. Why are you going from a 17" to an 18" wheel? Generally, there's more tire options at lower costs with the 17's. Also, an 18" wheel and tire will weigh a bit more than the same exact setup in the 17" version. Another also to consider, is if there's any chance of going with 37's in the future. Brings it back full circle to the available 18" tire options.

Regardless of wheel size, try to stick with a tire that has a C load rating like your current 33's. D's and E's get progressively stiffer in their construction which will make for a harsher ride, especially with the slightly shorter sidewall of an 18" wheel/35" tire combo.

So...the 285/70/R17 is the metric (footprint 285mm x 70% height of the footprint by wheel size in inches, 17")...285mm is approximately 11.2" wide...so, the new tires being 12.5" wide will poke out almost 1 1/2 inches even if the offset/backspace on the new wheel was the same as the stock wheel. But, with the stock offset/backspace with the new tires, you run the risk of tire rubbing when turning hence the need to "Push Out" the new wheel a bit more which results in your new tires poking out even more than the 1 1/2" you would have with new wheels being the same as stock.

So you think with the +1mm offset I would have enough pushout to clear?

I just want a slightly bigger wheel. I think the 20" are too much for my liking and the 17s I currently have look a little small. I know the 18 isn't that much bigger. I also don't think I'll ever want 37s. That's a nice site though. Very helpful

Here are 17x9 with -12 on 12.50 x 35 tires. Had stock rubicon rims prior and ran 1.75 spacers to kick em out a little. Just prefer the more aggressive stance.
