I had a TJ Sahara I bought back in '99 that I loved and kept for a few years. After 20 plus years of pickups, long commutes, responsible Honda Accord driving. I'm back in a Jeep. Guess I'm having a mid life epiphany to get back to my youth. My first ride was a farm fresh 1980 K5 Blazer Silverado that I bought in 1989. I've been chasing that bond and feeling ever since.

Since my commute is no longer an hour each way and I am self-employed it was the perfect time to get back into a Jeep. I've been waiting for years. I also have a wife and teenage son that I would like to introduce to off roading. My off road experience is not extensive and mostly involved country roads, mud holes and the side of corn fields. With that in mind and knowing the Rubicon comes very very capable off the line, I'm not going to change much aside from cosmetics and get a good feel for what I need before committing to anything drastic. While a small lift and 35's are tempting, 33s are a big step up from the 30's that my TJ had. Things have changed a lot since those days. 35's with locking diffs were pretty hard core in those days. So, I have been reading up on my manual and this forum to get myself a good starting point. Right now I'm focused on a few cosmetic and convenient things and getting some recovery gear to get started. I decided to try to use Amazon for all my purchases.

My first order of business included replacing the whip antenna, adding some grab handles to the back, dividing up that center console and putting a mat in the back. I put together an emergency kit that included jumpers, zip ties, bungees, basic tools, fuses etc. from things I had laying around.

I bought the following based on recommendations I saw here and reading reviews. All were perfect for my needs.

My second order has arrived. This round I focused on basic recovery items, A front bull bar, small med/survival kit, entry guards, soft top window storage and an Alien Sunshade. I should be in pretty good shape for the summer and an entry into the trails.

Here's the list of what I purchased, all on Amazon.

Warn Low Height Grill Guard: Bolted on great, matches the steel bumper well and closes those recovery points a little bit more.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KQ2RL13?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Rhino USA recovery gear: Thought these were a great entry point. Bought multiple items to get a bulk discount. Haven't used them yet, but everything appears to be very well made and sturdy.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072KFP386?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NY1BF23?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076H8QBK6?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08ZLW9BTK?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Survival/First Aid Kit: May mount it on the back inside tailgate with the molle strips.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0775R685Z?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Alien Sunshade. Front and back in red: Looks great, planning on installing when I take off my hard top for summer. Being a pasty blonde, I need all the protection I can get.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JMFCXD9?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Door sill guards for the front and back: Easy and solid install and much cheaper the the OEM Mopar ones.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07X53XH21?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Mopar OEM Soft Top window storage bag. Want to keep them looking good as long as possible and have a good way to transport them when I have the soft-top installed. I plan to go in safari mode quite a bit when not fully down. But storms can roll in and out quickly.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08843GDW6?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

So far, everything I have received has been great. Quality and installation have all gone as hoped and planned. Not sure what my next steps will be, I should be good for a while.

Great write-up thus far. Once finally purchase, I'll be in a very similar situation/goals as you, so definitely bookmarking this to watch your build. Appreciate all the Amazon links, too - building my own wishlist.

Well my 3rd and 4th orders came in. Some of it was very welcomed Father's Day gifts.

A couple things I already had. Rumpl blanket and an Eno hammock and tree adapter straps. Just in case I ever get stranded or just need to get away. LOL.

I also ordered Duracell Powerpack Pro 1300. We had a nasty winter storm and lost power and also just entered hurricane season along with a long car trip. I figure for me it can do a lot of things in a small package. Jumpstart the car, air up my tires up to 160 psi and has dual ac and usb outlets along with a light. Figured I can kill a few birds with one stone. Plus, it should fit my needs.

I added the Rhino foldable shovel and pick to my recovery gear. Seems sturdy and very compact. Definitely a keeper.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BH7C339/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also ordered a trim removal kit. As I see more and more modifications are going to require some trim removal in the future.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08PCZ2875/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Next up were some grab handles for the driver and passenger. I had previously bought some paracord ones for the back that are working well. But I wanted something a little different for the front, so I settled on the GPCA GP-Grip Pros in red. The packaging was kinda cheesy and the utility pouches were kinda bent up. But after being in the Texas heat for a couple days, I'm sure they will straighten up. Installation went pretty good, but when I take off my Freedom panels, I'm sure I can tighten them down even more. Speaking of the utility pouches. I put a seatbelt cutter and glass breaker in the drivers one. And a Red Small Maglite that I already had in the passenger one.

Also, here's the seatbelt cutter and glass breaker I ordered: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0042VTYSW/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Lastly I wanted a fire extinguisher. After several back and forth thoughts between a traditional extinguisher and the Element E50. I ended up going with the element for the ease of use and the fact that it fits great right on the floor next to my drivers rail. I just sat it in there and it's pretty snug.

Good start! It’s hard not to go overboard, I like how you’re trying to figure out what you need before upgrading too much

As a graphic designer I journal and jot things down a lot. Found this excellent utility case to hold an Adventure log and notebook about thing on the road. Thought it fit in well!

Have you rolled it already?

By the way, I also initially purchased a Rhino USA recovery strap. But then I read reviews and found out that it's basically a tow strap with virtually no stretch. I returned it and got an actual snatch strap with over 20% stretch.

I figured someone would catch that I had rolled over. LOL!
I'll look into that snatch strap! Sounds like it would be another good tool to have.

I added a few more things out of necessity.

I had heard of some issues with delamination on the 8.4 screen. I don't use screen protectors on my phone, I'm just not into them. But I added one on the screen because I can totally see that it could become an issue in the Texas heat and my dirty hands, so I went ahead and purchased a screen protector. I'm extremely OCD so I was afraid it was going to be a nightmare to install correctly with no bubble and even. To my surprise it was pretty easy and the kit came with everything you need to get it right. I get some glare that I didn't used to get, but it also looks more crisp.

I was getting complaints from my wife and son about the back seatbelts cutting into their necks and being very uncomfortable. So I went with these. They totally match the black and red of the Rubicon interior so that was nice. The verdict is still out on if they help. But they should also help prevent flapping with the top off too.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06W5H11FK?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

Since the 2021 is the Jeeps 80th Birthday. I really wanted to get one of the 80th Anniversary badges. I didn't want to put it in the standard spot under the logo, and I didn't order the pair, so I was hoping it would fit above the license plate. Wasn't the case, it's too wide. But I like where it ended up fitting. Nice subtle touch.

Lastly, my wife complains that there is nowhere to put her wallet and phone when she's in the passenger seat. She was using the mesh pocket on the passenger door. I saw others say they lose their shape pretty quickly and her wallet is HEAVY. So I went with the tray inside the grab bar. I saw how close it is to the air bag so I will recommend using it sparingly. But it's a nice fit and easy to remove if not needed.

Added a couple more little interior items.

I needed some more front storage, so I got the gear tray that saddlebags the front of the console above the shifter. The fit wasn't perfect on the passenger side. There's a little notch that's cut out on the drivers side that they didn't do on the passenger side. I kept the tray in for about a week to decide if I really liked it before fixing it or just sending it back. Turns out I like that space and it doesn't get in the way of my legs so I just added a notch with a Dremel to match the other side and it sits flush now. I'm not using the adhesive because I want to be able to remove it when needed for cleaning, etc.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08XYPFHXK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Next I want to add some trim to the knobs to get a little more of the red in the interior. I went with the red aluminum ones and I really like them. My only complaint is that I would like them even better if they had the satin finish that the Rubicon dash has. The quality and fit were great, though.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08PD1V1ZZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&th=1

You can see both of them in this pic. I shot this right before busting out the Dremel to make that notch, you can see that it's not flush in the picture on the passenger side. Now it is.
