This topic has probably mentioned before but, I ran the jeep over the scales at the dump because I was curious about the curb weight.

Tank nearly full of diesel
DEF nearly full
Me in the Jeep and my 10 lb little dog...

5400 lbs.

It run and performs like it was a bit lighter, it seems to me...

How much do you and the roof rack weigh?

The roof rack was not on it...pretty much just the jeep, me and the dog.
Seem high doesn't it...maybe I'll hit a CAT scale at the truck stop to verify.

Yeah and when you consider that a F-150 Supercrew 4x4 FX4 with a V8 weighs less than that, it's painful. Imagine the performance and efficiency these things would be capable of if FCA would shed several hundred pounds of weight.

our diesel gvwr is also higher than the average gasoline rubicon. i believe we're allowed 6200
I just checked the door label on my Rubicon . . . GVWR is actually 6100 lbs.

This is what the TFL guys warned about . . . the overall weight of diesel equipped Wrangler is quite high and leaves little weight allowance for 4 full size adults and their gear . . . let alone equipment like winches, additional skid plates/armor, etc.

Both axles have a GAWR of 3100lbs. You would think this would mean that the GVWR for the JLURD is 6200lbs. It is actually listed as 6100lbs. Measured weights for a soft top without passenger or gear are around 5040 - 5080 lbs. Add 125 for the hard top and it is pretty easy to see how the addition of a person and a dog would put the weight to 5400lbs.

So this is a four dour vehicle...theoretically that means one should be able to put four adults in it. The average U.S. male weighs 195, the average U.S. female was 165. So say two average adult men = 390lbs and two average adult women = 330lbs. Meaning passenger weight for four average occupants is 720lbs. For a hard top with 900lbs of usable load before hitting GVWR that means a total of 190lbs left over for bumpers, and winch, and air compressor, and tools, and roof rack, and rock rails, and belly armor....and you see where I am going with this. An average set of steel bumpers is going to eat 160lbs - over 400lbs. A winch 80 - 100, rock rails 100, belly armor another 100 - 200.

The other piece here is that it is not just total weight you have to worry about it is balance. A lot of that extra weight sits on the front end. Meaning that the front has less room before hitting GAWR than does the rear. With front bumpers and winches sitting 100% on the front end, and passenger, rock rail, skid plates, divided pretty evenly, it is very possible to reach point where you are not quite at GVRW but have substantially exceeded front GAWR.

Bottom line is that any well configured JLURD (even with heavy use of aluminum) is going to be pushing or exceeding GVWR just with driver...start adding passengers and a trail weight of 6500lbs could be easily reached.

And with this I continue my ongoing campaign to convince MetalCloak...and every other suspension company to produce diesel specific springs and shocks.

Even more concerning there are JK's riding around out there at these numbers. 🙀

Yeah on my JLU the door jamb sticker showed a payload capacity of 850 lbs. My family of 5 ate up 800 lbs. of that when we got into the Jeep. That left me with 50 lbs. of legal load carrying.

Bag of concrete mix? A few camping supplies? Load of groceries from the store? That's the most I could do...but only one at a time if we were all together. It just simply wasn't feasible. One huge reason I switched to the JT.

Makes even less sense on the High Altitude. Remember the HA is equipped with the larger TJ axles and brakes. Door sticker has the same 3100 per axle with a total GVWR of 5900.

Yeah, I see the giant Road Armor bumpers, winches, roof racks, big steel sliders and on and on. I just wince, on these vehicles every pound counts and is a balancing act between utility and weight.

Is the gross weight of the vehicle based on the braking? My atv trailer axles are rated at 3500 lbs and they are no way as beefy as my rubi axles.

It used to be combined GAWR, now in addition to GAWR, it is braking, safety features, stability, durability, etc. In short determined through testing.
